Our 50+ Club officially kicked off our Summer Excursion Season today with an amazing day trip to beautiful Midcoast Maine!
Our first stop was the iconic Pemaquid Point Light, one of the most photographed lighthouses in New England! Built in 1827 under the orders of President John Quincy Adams, this lighthouse has guided sailors along Maine’s rocky coast for nearly 200 years. The crashing waves, ocean views, and sunshine made it very easy for our group to lose track of time exploring the grounds.
We were supposed to stop next at Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site / Fort William Henry, but between traffic and our lighthouse adventures, we made the executive decision to do a scenic drive-by instead. Don’t worry though, we’re already making plans to come back in the fall for a picnic and proper visit!
Next stop: King Eider’s Pub in Damariscotta for lunch! Fun fact: Damariscotta is famous for its oysters thanks to the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Damariscotta River!
Many in our group embraced the full coastal Maine experience and ordered oysters for lunch because… when in Damariscotta, right?
After lunch, we boarded a narrated river cruise where we spent two hours enjoying the sunshine, watching for seals, learning about oyster farming, and hearing fascinating history about the river and local communities. A few brave members of the group even enjoyed freshly shucked oysters on the half shell while cruising the river.
To finish off the perfect day, we made one final stop at Round Top Ice Cream, because no summer road trip is complete without it.
Great weather, great food, great company, and lots of laughs made this the perfect way to launch our summer adventures. We can’t wait for the next trip!
