Argentine pianist and composer Guillermo Klein is one of jazz's most quietly revered creative voices. His writing blends Argentine folk, big band jazz, and modern classical in ways that seem to unfold differently on every listen — which may be why his ensemble Los Guachos has held a yearly Village Vanguard residency since 2007. Saturday at The Side Door — Edmar Castañeda Quartet.

There is no one in jazz quite like Edmar Castañeda. The Colombian-born harpist plays bass lines, melody, and harmony simultaneously — a technique NPR calls "the real astonishment." A Latin Grammy nominee and collaborator with Wynton Marsalis, Sting, and Paco de Lucia, Castañeda has simply redefined what his instrument can do. Joining him is his wife and longtime collaborator, vocalist Andrea Tierra.

April May Webb is one of the most exciting voices in jazz today. Winner of the 2024 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition — judged by Christian McBride, Bill Charlap, and Terri Lyne Carrington — out of over 220 vocalists from 21 countries. A Woodshed Network Artist named by NEA Jazz Master Dee Dee Bridgewater, she and her husband and musical partner Randall Haywood were named U.S. Cultural Ambassadors by the State Department in 2023. This Friday at The Side Door — the Kevin Hays Trio. 🎹
One of jazz's most celebrated pianists comes home to Connecticut. Raised in Greenwich, Kevin Hays signed to Blue Note Records in the 1990s and has since built one of the most acclaimed careers in jazz — touring with Sonny Rollins, recording a celebrated piano duo project with Brad Mehldau, and co-writing credits on the Steve Gadd Band's Grammy Award-winning album. The New Yorker named him one of the best of the year, calling his playing "a jolt of joy." Tonight he brings his trio to Old Lyme for a very special homecoming.

This Saturday at The Side Door — Rich Goldstein's "Into the Blue" Quartet. 🎸
One of Connecticut's most celebrated jazz guitarists comes to The Side Door with his acclaimed 2025 release Into the Blue — a record that showcases Goldstein's singular voice as a composer and bandleader. Born in Brooklyn and a longtime faculty member at the Hartt School's Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz, Rich has shared the stage with Houston Person, Javon Jackson, Steve Davis, Andy LaVerne, and Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez, among many others. Tonight he brings an exceptional group to Old Lyme for a night of hard-swinging, groove-driven jazz.

This Friday at The Side Door — A Celebration of Elvin Jones: The Dear Elvin J. Project. 🥁
One of jazz's most legendary drummers, honored by one of his most devoted protégés. Tony Moreno's connection to Elvin Jones began at age eleven — Elvin gave him his first set of drums, the very same ones he played on John Coltrane's Live at Birdland and Crescent, and then taught him for the next seven years. Tonight, Moreno brings the Dear Elvin J. Project to The Side Door — ten compositions from Elvin's classic repertoire, reimagined in fresh new arrangements by NYC composer Rich Shemaria, performed by an extraordinary ensemble. Notably, bassist Gene Perla performed on the original Elvin Jones Genesis recording — the very music being celebrated tonight.

Mike Rodriguez is one of the most compelling trumpeters working in jazz today — a Queens-born musician whose career has taken him to the very highest levels of the music. A Grammy-nominated artist, he has performed and toured with Clark Terry, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Joe Lovano, Quincy Jones, Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. His recordings have earned widespread critical acclaim, and his debut album Reverence established him as a major voice on the instrument. Tonight he brings his quintet to Old Lyme for an exceptional night of jazz.
