The Oklahoma Art Guild's 'Small Works' Show is nearly over - the last day is this Saturday, June 27th to see the incredible pieces of OAG artists along side the stunning art of resident artists at Street Smarts Gallery.

I felt Jackie Sharpe didn’t quite know what to think of me during our phone conversation before we actually met in person.

Pushy? I hope not. In-your-face? I hoped not. I emphasized the earnestness of what we are trying to convey in the gallery and the importance of having the right people to contribute to it. In this case it was making sure she was fully aware my appraisal of her work and her potential exhibited talent far beyond that of an amateur hobbyist and that she had something to contribute.

Although she had sold a few paintings here and there to friends and at a few exploratory shows she just wasn’t sure if her work was ready for public prime-time.

You don’t have to be a genius to recognize genius or talent or potential. Jackie agreed to come to the gallery to see what we were attempting to put together and met some of us doing the putting together – somehow, I convinced her that my opinion mattered and she agreed to take that leap of faith and joined our little enterprise.

Her quirky characters make me laugh, and sometimes when I’m looking at her work, I tilt my head, squint my eyes and wrinkle my forehead unknowingly mimicking the contorted facial expressions of the people and dogs she paints. Her mind goes to another place, a proven fact evidenced by what she creates.

Our model, Bill Kenney appeared for the Life Sketch Session at the gallery in full western marshal gear, ready to take in the bad guys. Artists, Leilani Pounders, Abbie Parsons and Cienna Cullen were on hand to capture the nuances of the moment. Bill was a good study for us and a patient new model. Bill has fun in this stage of his life hiring out for a variety of venues and events – mostly historic re-enactments, parades and holiday street theatre. His wife Edith hand makes most of his costumes with very little obtained thru retail channels. Great fun for him and for us. Thanks Bill and thank you to the artists taking advantage of this unique opportunity.

The Life Study sketch Sessions are held monthly on the second Thursday from 6-7pm. They are free and open to the public.

I’m still mentally processing the news today…
If you remember, Street Smarts Gallery was voted as one of the top five best art galleries in Oklahoma City. In no particular order, the top five include;

Street Smarts Studios & Gallery
The Oklahoma Museum of Art (Downtown)
Oklahoma Contemporary (Downtown)
Howell Art Gallery
North Gallery & Studio

The Oklahoman/USA Today vote tally has determined the top three finalists for ‘Best Art Gallery’ and Street Smarts Gallery is among them. The newspaper will publicly announce the winner from those three at the awards banquet on August 13th.

Needless to say, we're ecstatic about being elevated from top five to the final three and are looking forward to the announcement in August.

I will be attending the banquet representing the gallery. Please let me know if you have an interest in attending as well. Banquet info is attached as a photo.

We’re all very happy about the results – many, many, people brought us this far. It’s any body’s guess as to whom the winner will be. The other top two galleries making the cut? Most likely, the behemoths downtown. I would be just as surprised if they were not in the top three as I am about being in the top three. It has been (and still is) a David & Goliath, Rocky & Apollo Creed uphill "Sisyphean" task. But so worth it.

Thank you again to all of you for voting last month. Thank you again for attending our events and thank you for buying art from the talented team that call Street Smarts Gallery their home gallery.

Ever want to try your hand at sketching a live model? Now's your chance. See you in two days for our Live Sketch Session - always on the 2nd Thursday from 6-7pm.

No experience or talent when it comes to drawing? No worries, you won't be alone - the guy that runs the place has you beat in the 'that looks like a 3rd grader's drawing' category. This is a come-one-come-all level of ability and a no judgement zone. You don't even have to share your work.

Next model up is the inimitable Mr. Bill Kenney, whom will be in his best wild west gear as a gunslinger or Sheriff. Mr. Kenney is a re-enactor extraordinaire with unparalleled hand made costumes.

You gotta love this stuff, we are certainly enjoying ourselves.

The session is always free, open to the public and family friendly. Note: this is not a class, bring your own art supplies.

Don't know what you did yesterday evening, but we had a swell time at the Gallery's First Friday Open House.

Good grub was served from the Cupbop Korean BBQ food truck, there was plenty of wine and groovy art that looked back at you.

Hats off to those bringing the vino, cheese and fruit tray, Sangria mix, snacks and even pizza without being asked.

Happy people doing happy things.

Happy to announce the Korean BBQ Food Truck (CupBop) will be at Street Smarts Gallery tomorrow at our monthly 'First Friday Open House' from 5-7. In addition to our regular crowd we'll also have the addition of the Oklahoma Art Guild show participants. Their art added to ours... lots and lots to see.
