“I remember something from college, Wordsworth or one of those old buggers, talking about ‘spots of time,’ moments of experience when something ordinary becomes significant. That’s what junk is for me, finding these little spots of time, only they’re things you can hold in your hand.” ~ Michael Zadoorian, SECOND HAND

Heartfelt thanks to all who came out to share the stories of objects that represented the ordinary becoming significant in their lives. What a treat to sit in community for a rich and wonderful adult show-and-tell!

We witnessed stories of magical bones, a treasured necklace, a transatlantic Oklahoma object connection, a treasured piece of perhaps-not-masterful art, an artifact of definitely-masterful musical art, the keys to the arts kingdom, and a yearbook that is helping a phoenix to rise from the ashes. From photos to puppets to hockey pucks, it was a wonderful night, and we hope to do it again next year!

Thanks again to our amazing sponsors OK Cider Co and The Floating Bookshop!
Don’t forget, we’ll have a casual story circle at Ok Cider Co this Tuesday at 7pm, for those who want to come work on their stories for next month’s slam “THE GREAT OUTDOORS.”

Congratulations to the winners of our August StorySLAM! 🏆 This month’s theme was Show and Tell.

Our runner up was David, a first time storyteller, who explained the meaning behind a very special necklace given to him by his daughter. 🪐

Our champion, Kel, returned to the stage with a yearbook from his senior year at Will Rogers High School and the story of how he helped photograph every junior girl in the yearbook. 📸

Both winners received amazing handmade trophies designed by the leadership team for the OKC StorySLAM. They also received gift cards to OK Cider Co and The Floating Bookshop. 🍺

Rev. Kent Doss attended the July StorySLAM to encourage everyone to attend an upcoming event sponsored by VOICE called “Who Is My Neighbor?” Civic Academy on Tuesday, July 21 at 6:30 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church (1401 NW 25th St, OKC 73106).

VOICE (Voices Organized in Civic Engagement) is organizing to continue to build power to improve our broken immigration system.

The academy will bust myths about immigrants and immigration, share a glimpse into their lives right here in Oklahoma City, and work to educate voters.

The July StorySLAM featured amazing and inspiring stories from New Americans. We discovered the differences in clothing sizes in China and the USA. We learned how an immigrant moved from Afghanistan to America. We heard how a father’s dream of bringing his family to America was finally realized through DNA testing. We reflected on the grace given by a cop to an immigrant mother whose young son was playing unattended in a public park. We celebrated as an immigrant woman gained freedom to choose her own clothing and future in the United States.

Thank you to our emcee, Molly, for hosting the show. Thank you to Mackenzie with The Spero Project for sharing your organization’s mission to assist refugees in resettling in Oklahoma.

Next month’s theme is Show and Tell. Bring an object with a story on Friday, August 14, at 7:00 p.m. at OK Cider Co.

Thanks to everyone who came out to this month's Pride-themed storySLAM! People getting to share their stories honestly in a safe space is a beautiful form of freedom, don't you think? We heard great stories about ...
a joyous friendship and the importance of allies,
being schooled in bisexuality in a way that led to living with no regrets and a bigger social conscience,
how to be unafraid to be out in small towns in rural Oklahoma,
a day in the life of being q***r at the Y in Edmond,
the struggle to balance living your values while fighting intense cravings for Chik-fil-a, and
how a copy of The Gayly made a young kid feel seen and led to an amazing full circle moment many years later.

This month we took up a collection for Sisu Youth Services, an organization that does amazing work with local unhoused youth--a large portion of whom identify as LGBTQ+
If you'd like to learn more about their work, sponsor a meal, volunteer, or donate funds, please visit https://sisuyouth.org

Big thanks again to our sponsors OK Cider Co and The Floating Bookshop!

BIG CONGRATS to this month's winner Brad and runner-up Kayla, and 🌈 Happy Pride Month to all! 🌈
