Our next Senior Spotlight is Olivia Allen, writer and director of "Beautiful Things Now"! Olivia is a BA Theatre and Education double major, with an Undergraduate Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership - Arts Administration.

About Beautiful Things Now:
Created as a cross between a play for young audiences and a memory play for a contemporary audience, Beautiful Things Now explores loss and grief through a child's eyes. When families lose someone cherished, how do we communicate our large, explosive feelings to the young people around us? What happens when children watch the adults in their lives change because of grief? And most importantly, how do the children in our lives constantly manage to provide us with the hope, joy, love, and care that we are all waiting to receive?

About Olivia's Creation Process:
Beautiful Things Now was born out of my own personal curiosity. I've always been someone who loves to learn, and after experiencing a deep personal loss last year, I began to wonder about how people explained death and grief to children. Being an education major who is constantly surrounded by wonderful kids, I began to see with new eyes just how much the kids around me wanted adults to be fully honest with them. Loss is no exception to this; I began writing this play to highlight both the ways that children have historically been told about death and the ways that child-like joy and curiosity can heal and mend.

Our next senior spotlight is Harley Harris, creator of Proclimity!
🪩💿🐍☁️🕹

What is Proclimity?
Proclimity is an immersive art room that pulls from the experiences I had growing up surrounded by the proclivities *wink* of those around me and the limits *wink* we all faced over the last 22+ years. This project puts those experiences into an absurd collection of art in the Goldstar basement.

What inspired this piece?
I first had the idea for this when I moved back home in 2020 and I saw the struggles my parents had been hiding while I was at college, and I realized those struggles have followed me throughout my life. I was inspired by meow wolf/factory obscura, popular immersive art experiences, to get a room and fill it with wild art. I've always loved visual art and, after taking some fine art classes these last few semesters, I felt like this was the best opportunity to bring these ideas to life after drawing them on scraps of paper for the last two years.

What Panacea means to them:
The Show ‘Panacea’ written by the dazzling Lauren Leppke follows grief in the eyes of a new audience. We explore the fake remedies that some give us to deal with REAL grief, and we tackle this with solutions. One big solution we offer in the show is human interaction (which we all know is very limited these days!).

About their artistic process:
All of our actors and I have been rehearsing and putting together this show as a team to show to you all the different layers of grief (that is not just Lauren and I but our entire cast!), and how we personally deal with them day to day.

My capstone piece is a short play that I wrote over the period of two years. The process has been exciting and I have greatly enjoyed learning more about my play and characters as we rehearse and get ready for the performance.

“Panacea” stemmed off of the idea that grief can manifest itself in ways that people outside of the situation don’t understand. Not everything is so easily explained.What happens when your trying to find an answer but there are too many fake remedies to sort through? “Panacea” explores human interactions with grief and the aftermath of it.

Our first Senior Artist Spotlight is Shelby Parker! 🧣✨🧶💥

Shelby is a senior BA Theatre & Performance and BFA Film Production double major.

About CANOPY/the forest floor: When someone leaves you, how do you love the people who stay? Followed by a screening of CANOPY, a short film about a small family and the worst day ever, the stage play the forest floor follows the same three characters in a different part of their lives. Exploring the role of different mediums in the same universe, CANOPY/the forest floor uses the strengths of live theatre and film in opposition to create two sides of a story.

About Shelby's Creation Process: In the last few years, as theatre has adapted in ways that bring it closer to film than ever, I wanted to explore how the differences in style, mood, and audience experience between theatre and film could be used to the advantage of the piece. As the process of shooting a movie is like, long, I began the creation of the play in conjunction with editing the film. Working on this has reminded me of the reasons why I love both mediums, and I'm excited to share these characters, this world, and this sorta-experiment with you all soon!!
