This weekend, the Ojai Music Festival celebrates its 80th anniversary, featuring Esa-Pekka Salonen as Music Director. The Festival has a rich legacy as one of the world’s most adventurous laboratories for contemporary and classical music. Operating under a unique model where a new Music Director is appointed annually, the festival has consistently drawn the avant-garde, the iconic, and the boundary-pushing to the Libbey Bowl.

That history includes legends and iconoclasts including Igor Stravinsky, Aaron Copland, Pierre Boulez, John Adams, Peter Sellars, and Michael Tilson Thomas –who passed away earlier this year.
MTT, as Michael Tilson Thomas is known in the classical music world, has one of the most enduring and transformative legacies in the history of the Ojai Music Festival. Over nearly three decades, he served as Music Director or co-Music Director a remarkable seven times, profoundly shaping the festival’s identity as a laboratory for the musical avant-garde.

Shortly before his passing, Michael Tilson Thomas gifted the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts a large charger by Beatrice Wood, featuring a beautiful luster glaze.

This weekend, the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts celebrates the Ojai Music Festival and Michael Tilson Thomas’ beautiful gift for the Center’s Permanent Collection.

Please join us on June 7th as Chamber On The Mountain in Ojai, CA presents Pianist Hui Wu, with special guest artist, Veteran Joo Kim, for an extraordinary musical experience in a setting of extraordinary beauty. To open the program, Hui Wu will perform Philip Glass’s composition of “Wichita Vortex Sutra,” with the poem by Allen Ginsberg recited by guest artist, Veteran Joo Kim. Pianist Hui Wu then juxtaposes two cornerstones of the piano repertoire: the complete Op. 25 Etudes of Frédéric Chopin and the 10 Etudes of Philip Glass (Book I). By pairing these cycles, the program explores the "Etude" as both a technical laboratory and a high-art form, tracing the line from Chopin’s 19th-century chromaticism to Glass’s 21st century minimalism. Performance takes place in Logan House (located at the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts in Upper Ojai). After meeting at Juilliard, bassoonist Leah Kohn and violinist Niv Ashkenazi were inspired to create a new kind of chamber music. Together, they have crafted engaging programs that reimagine classic works, premiere new pieces, and engage the imaginations of their audience. Since their first performance in 2015, they have performed on concert series and at major venues throughout the United States. Their delightful program arranged for violin and bassoon features works by Bloch, Mozart, Paganini, Berlin, Babcock, Bach, Saint-Saëns, and Gershwin!
