The Beatles recorded "Leave My Kitten Alone" on August 14, 1964, complete with five takes, overdubs, and John Lennon shouting his way through the chorus. Then they just left it in the vault. It stayed unreleased for 31 years, finally surfacing on Anthology 1 in 1995. It was only the second full-band recording the group ever discarded entirely, the first being "How Do You Do It" back in 1962. Jones and Haggard weren't on speaking terms at the time, so producer Billy Sherrill deliberately kept quiet about who'd written this song when Haggard's manager pitched it. Jones recorded it without knowing his estranged friend had penned it, and only found out afterward - by then the two had already patched things up. It became Jones's ninth and final #1 as a solo artist, and it knocked Haggard's own duet with Willie Nelson, "Pancho and Lefty," out of the top spot. In 2006, the two finally sang it together for real on their duets album, 24 years after Haggard first wrote it.
