This year, the Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo will be inducted into the 2017 ProRodeo Hall of Fame. Some partnerships just make sense. Ogden Pioneer Days is an Ogden event, through and through, so it means everything to have the city itself and one of Weber County's most beloved programs in our corner year after year:

Wadman Corporation is back as our Title Sponsor, and we're more grateful than ever to have them! This Ogden-based general contractor has been at it for more than 70 years.

Most people at the rodeo are focused on watching the arena. But there's another performance happening on the mic, and it's more complex than you might think! Here's what separates a great rodeo announcer from a good one:

1️⃣ They know the story before the gate opens. Great announcers spend hours researching every competitor so when that cowboy nods his head, the crowd already knows what's at stake.

2️⃣ They control the energy of the room. They know when to let the action speak and when to bring the crowd in. That's a skill you can't fake.

3️⃣ They teach without ever sounding like a teacher. Every newcomer in those stands needs context. The best announcers give it without making veterans feel like they've heard it all before.

4️⃣ They make the crowd feel like participants, not spectators. And that changes everything!

And hat’s off to our long-time announcer Roger Mooney. He’s part of the OPD family and we can be happier about that.

Cowboy culture doesn’t always get a fair portrayal in the media. Some folks think it's a relic, like these guidelines don’t have much to offer in 2026.

But we beg to differ!

You see, the code cowboys live by isn't old-fashioned. It's just honest. And we think the world could use a lot more of it right now:

-Show up, especially when it isn't convenient. That's when it counts most.
-Own your mistakes. No excuses, no shifting blame. You make it right.
-Respect the land and what it gives you. That debt doesn't disappear.
-Know your neighbors and mean it. Not just a wave from the driveway.
-Leave things better than you found them. In the arena and out of it.

The “Code of the West” hasn't changed. And in our humble opinion, the world needs it more than ever!

❤️❤️❤️Volunteer Spotlight

It definitely takes a village to run a rodeo—especially one as large and involved as Ogden Pioneer Days!

Featured here are some amazing folks who provide countless hours of service to help make the rodeo happen.

Craig Smith, of the timeless Smith & Edwards, is our Committee Chair and finance Vice Chair.

Next to him is Judy Duncombe, our Executive Administrator. She runs the front office and came to us after nearly 40-years with Utah State Fairpark. (To say she is indispensable is an understatement.)

These two are our designated “car-herders” as they attempt to keep us all in line and the ship moving forward!

The cowboy in the sunglasses and denim shirt is long time Committee Member Ben Howell. He is over our Pre-Rodeo events and is pretty much a fixture at the rodeo. He is the real deal—a true cowboy through and through.

Committee member Pat Poce (seated between to friends) runs our Traces of the West art show. He replaced our beloved Susie Van Hooser and has become a gentle force on our dedicated team.

Hats off to these good folks and everyone else that make the magic happen year after year!
