DEVIATED THEATRE

DEVIATED THEATRE Storytellers Kimmie Dobbs Chan and Enoch Chan create original productions, heralded for spellbindingl In 2008 they co-founded DEVIATED THEATRE.

DEVIATED THEATE Artistic Directors, Enoch Chan and Kimmie Dobbs Chan, are co-creators of worlds. Their work has been heralded as “spellbindingly compelling” and “eerie, esoteric, eclectic (DCMetro Theater Arts 2014, 2015). Together they are committed to pioneering the dance opera, a name they have coined for their dramatic evening length stage productions which mix contemporary dance, acting and a

erials to tell fantastical original stories of other worlds. At times haunting and others humorous, this signature style has been described by the Washington Post as “hypnotic multidisciplinary” (2011) and also “incredibly effective” (2012). In 2020 and 2019 Kimmie and Enoch were featured on WETA Arts for a television spot about arts and outer space, regarding their show ‘Beyond’ – an existential dance opera about astronauts caught in a dust storm on Mars, which explores themes of fate vs destiny. In 2019 Kimmie choreographed for the National Cherry Blossom Festival Opening Ceremony held at the Warner Theater, with Skylark Creative. She was highlighted in a 2017 ART WORKS podcast for the National Endowment for Arts as an emerging artist. In 2016 Kimmie and Enoch were honored to choreograph for the National Gallery of Art Community Celebration for the Re-opening of the East Building. The celebration performance was an adaptation of their work ‘Creature’ - an apocalyptic fantasy which highlights humanity’s effect on the landscape of the earth and humanity’s cosmic role as both creature and creator. DEVIATED THEATRE has performed nationally at venues including The Kennedy Center, Ga***rd National Convention Center, and Ailey Citigroup Theater. Awards include the Individual Artists Award for Choreography from the Maryland State Arts Council (2014, 2011), Mark Ryder Original Choreography Grant (2012), and the John F. Kennedy Center Local Dance Commission (2011). Also follow us at:

We’re still carrying the atmosphere of Friday night. Here are a few low resolution screenshots of the evening.

Thank you to everyone who came and allowed the work to unfold with such presence. The way the audience met the work was felt deeply from the stage.

siGHt is never the same twice. It becomes what the room is willing to hold.

If you were there and feel moved to, we’d love to hear a sentence or two about what stayed with you.

With deep appreciation,
Kimmie + Enoch

When siGHt first premiered in 2011, it was more provoking than we anticipated. Mental health was still largely unspoken, and often moralized.

Some viewers expected the character’s loss to be legible, as if the story could offer a clear answer to “why.” The work was even described as incomplete, as though a crucial piece of the narrative were missing.

But siGHt was never meant to explain loss.
It was meant to sit with it.

The piece holds space where language fails. Because for those who grieve, the absence of explanation is often part of the trauma itself.

In a day and age marked by fracture, uncensored art feels increasingly precious. Especially when it is held with reverence, as a mirror for what asks for light.

If you feel called, sit with us. You are welcome here.

There are moments when the world flips,
and nothing that once made sense, stays.

We learn to carry what cannot be spoken.
To become sealed.
Unreadable.

But what if being seen
truly seen
is where peace begins?

siGHt moves through the fragile architecture of being a human without answers. A human with love that has nowhere to go.

In rehearsal, the vocabulary evolves.
New lifts. New risks. New physics.
As if the world of siGHt is revealing itself one breath, one suspension, one impossible shape at a time.
Fifteen years after its premiere, this piece is rewriting its own language. And we are simply listening.

Shout out to and for nailing this on the first go. “Just balance and walk.”

AUDITION ANNOUNCEMENT — Child Performer (Ages 5–7)

DEVIATED THEATRE presents siGHt
Casting a Young Dancer/Actor for a Featured Role

DEVIATED THEATRE is seeking a young performer (ages 5–7) with natural presence, curiosity, and expressive movement for a featured role in our 2026 remount of siGHt, a dance-opera known for its immersive storytelling and breathtaking visual world.

About the Role
We’re casting a child who plays a character with a vivid imagination — someone who notices things adults sometimes overlook. In the story, this child senses gentle, otherworldly figures in the space, portrayed by our professional dancers. The production is magical, artistic, and deeply heartfelt, with touching dramatic elements that allow the child character to experience curiosity and bravery.

No previous stage experience is required — just openness, focus, and the ability to take simple direction and hear music cues. Children with dance, theatre, or movement backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Why This Is a Beautiful Opportunity
• Work alongside professional dancers, actors, and aerialists in a nurturing environment.
• Be part of a respected, award-winning company known for visionary, cinematic productions.
• Experience the joy of storytelling through movement in a supportive environment.
• Build confidence, stage presence, and artistic expression.
• Small time commitment with meaningful stage moments.

Project Details
• Rehearsals to begin immediately, and pick up in January with some flexibility
• Tech and Performance: Friday, February 20, 2026 at Atlas Performing Arts Center
• Honorarium provided.
