I had a great day spending time out in Big Cypress National Preserve photographing the beauty of the place I love so much. The day was perfect - a sky filled with bulbous clouds rolling across the horizon and very little wind.

As I photographed the clouds began coming together to form a very large storm. I kept photographing until I felt the cool wind of the coming rain, then grabbed my gear and made a run for it. I got to the car just as the downpour began.

This tree in our backyard has become known as the “deer bed” tree because we once found tufts of deer hair in the nook of the tree where a deer had curled up to sleep. I had tried to photograph this area several times, but the light was never good and I wasn’t satisfied with the image. Finally, after several years of trying, I was fortunate to be out in the swamp with my 5×7” view camera when the light was right.

As you enjoy the Big Cypress National Preserve and the areas surrounding Clyde Butcher’s Big Cypress Gallery, we hope you take a moment to appreciate the local native wildflowers blooming this time of year. These seasonal blooms add vibrant color to the landscape while supporting important pollinators like bees, butterflies, and birds throughout the Everglades ecosystem. 🌼🦋

I had seen this old mangrove - which survived Hurricane Donna in the 1960s - several times while taking photographs in the Ten Thousand Islands. It expresses the lonely, primal feeling that I love to experience in the wilderness.

I had been struck by this mangrove’s sculptural beauty before, but the light had not been right for me to take a photograph. Finally, one summer morning, everything came together and I was able to take this picture.

Unfortunately, when Hurricane Andrew hit South Florida in 1992, this mangrove was destroyed.
