The par-2 6th hole on the blue course, named for Dr. Fager, overlooks the Monmouth Park picnic area (racing fans may note the retired red-and-white striped quarter pole located adjacent to the tee box).  Tee placement is key for this hole, as it gives the player a shot at a hole-in-one, but only if they can avoid the low lying hazard to the right of the fairway.

At the age of 4, Dr. Fager became the only horse to ever hold four American titles in one year. In 1968, he was named Horse of the Year, champion handicap horse, champion sprinter, and co-champion turf horse. He set a world record of 1:32.2 for a mile in the Washington Park Handicap while carrying 134 pounds.  At three he won seven stakes races while setting track records in the New Hampshire Sweepstakes and Rockingham Special. He was named the champion sprinter of 1967 in the Vosburgh Handicap. He also finished third in the "race of the decade", the Woodward Stakes. Upon retirement to stud in Florida, he became an important sire and broodmare sire, and led the North American sire list in 1977.

Considered to be the greatest turf horse in American racing history, hole # 5 is named after Round Table. His most significant win was in 1956 during the Breeders’ Futurity Stakes. At age 3, he was sold by Clairborne Farm owner Arthur B. Hancock Jr. to Travis M. Kerr, an Oklahoma oilman. Kerr hired William Molter as the trainer and Round Table won the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland and finished third in the Kentucky Derby. After the Derby, he was shipped back to California where he won 11 consecutive races. He dominated American thoroughbred racing in 1958 and was the first horse to win the Malibu Stakes, the San Fernando Stakes and the Santa Anita Maturity. In 1959, he won 9 of his 14 races and his third Champion Turf Horse title. He is the third American Thoroughbred to earn more than a million dollars.

The Par-2 fifth hole on the Blue Course loops to the left then continues under the fairway to the hole.  The key is to be strong enough to make it around the loop and get to the pin, but not so much that you’ll bounce into the rocks and have to take a drop.  It may take some luck (or lots of practice) for a hole-in-one, but par should be well within reach with a good tee shot.

Zenyatta, also known as the “Queen of Racing,” is the name of hole #4. She was purchased as a yearling by record producer, Jerry Moss and his wife Ann. She received her name after the album “Zenyatta Mondatta,” by the Police. The Police were signed to A&M records by Moss.

She was a late developing filly who went on to win a maiden race and an allowance race in 2007. From 2008 - 2010 she recorded 17 graded stakes wins and in 2009 became the first mare to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Known for her “dance moves” and her taste for “Guinness stout,”Zenyatta had a passionate following. She was known for her closing finishes, overtaking her opponents in the final strides.

Imagine if, when naming a baby, parents had to make sure that no other child under 10 had the same name. Such is the task racehorse owners face when naming their thoroughbreds. The Jockey Club, which has the power to approve and deny names, has a rule that the names of active and breeding horses cannot be repeated until five years have passed and the horse is over 10 years old. Owners generally try to match the sire and the dam and get them into the name. Names can’t be more than 18 characters, including spaces and punctuation marks. They can’t consist entirely of initials or numbers, end in horse-related terms like “filly” or “colt” or numerical designations like “2nd” or “3rd.” Names of famous horses - including horses in the Racing Hall of Fame, winners of prestigious awards and big races, and horses that have won $2 million or more - are also excluded. Horses can’t be named after living people unless written permission to use their name is submitted to the Jockey Club.

Born in 1985, Bodacious Tatas won 11 races in her lifetime and nearly 1/2 a million dollars. The 3rd hole on the Blue Course takes you over a water feature. Stay straight to avoid the ’hills’ on either side of the fairway. This par 2 offers a good shot at a hole-in-one, but put too much on it and it will take you over the pin and leave you scrambling to save par.

The second hole on the blue course is a long par 2 that doglegs left after a narrow strip of fairway clears the water (don’t worry, the balls float). Make your way down to the pin via a wooden footbridge.

Hole #2 was named for Bold Ruler who was foaled on April 6, 1954. The American foal crop of 1954 is considered to be one of the best of the twentieth century. Bold Ruler stood out because of his raw speed, combined with courage that allowed him to overcome infirmities ranging from a tender mouth to chronic arthritis and soreness. Bold Ruler was a big, leggy horse, standing 16.1 hands (65 inches, 165 cm) with a great shoulder, powerful hindquarter, and a distinctive long, sloping hip going down to a straight hind leg. He was named 1957 Horse of the Year.

Bold Ruler retired to stud at Claiborne Farm in 1959, where he became the leading sire in North America from 1963 to 1969 and again in 1973. His eight titles were the highest for a North American sire in the twentieth century. Bold Ruler was best known as a sire of precocious 2-year-olds, including Hall of Famers Gamely and Secretariat.

This summer we’ll be introducing you to some background on both of our 18-hole courses. First up is hole # 1 on the blue course - a straightforward slightly uphill par 2 with some undulating hills to the right and a hazard to the left. #1 is aptly named after the famous champion Seabiscuit. He was foaled in 1933 and named for his father, Hardtack. ‘Sea biscuit’ was the name for a type of hard cracker eaten by sailors. He was named American Horse of the Year for 1938 and was seen as a symbol of hope to many during the Great Depression. For more on Seabiscuit, check out Laura Hillenbrands bestselling 2001 novel or Universal Studio’s 2003 adaptation.

Bluegrass Minature Golf

Miniature golf is a great way to sharpen your putting skills, spend some time with your family, or just get some fresh air. Our two “state of the art” 18-hole courses were designed and built by world famous Harris Golf to provide fun for all ages and skill levels. Each hole has its own unique quality with just the right amount of contour and break to play differently and present a creative challenge.

Both courses have a horse racing theme but you won’t find any gimmicks at Bluegrass Mini Golf. Gone are the windmills and clowns that you’d find on a typical “putt-putt” course. Instead you’ll find a variety of holes, some that require more skill than luck, but all of which will keep you guessing every time you come out to play.

For a behind the scenes look at what it takes to be a mini golf "master" check out the New York Times video on Bluegrass!

Beautifully landscaped with fountains, ponds, and streams, both courses provide a relaxing atmosphere and perfect way to unwind after a long day. Whether you’re out with the kids or looking for a fun date night - miniature golf is truly a sport for all ages that anyone and everyone can enjoy.
