Friday 6/20 is our annual John H. Forbes Day here at Bluegrass. Enjoy half price games all day in recognition of John, who combined his love for Monmouth Park and miniature golf to create BGMG. Nothing made him happier than to see the course filled with folks enjoying miniature golf at this beautiful setting. So in honor of John, bring the whole family out to play and have great day!

Happy Father’s Day Weekend! Come on out to Monmouth Park for Haskell Preview Day and a Hoodie Giveaway Saturday 6/14 and don’t forget that Fathers play mini golf for ½ Price (and get free admission into Monmouth Park) on Sunday 6/15!

This week’s featured hole honors Seattle Slew, the tenth Triple Crown winner and one of the most prolific sires of his generation.  Foaled in 1974 Seattle Slew went on to win his first nine starts, culminating with the 1977 Belmont Stakes to capture the Triple Crown.  He would go on to win five of his final eight races – a run which included a second place finish in the Paterson Handicap at the Meadowlands to finish his career with 14 wins and 2 places in 17 starts.  He would go on to sire, among many others, A.P. Indy, Capote, Slew o’ Gold, Surfside and Swale.

The Par-2 10th Hole on the Green Course starts in the shadow of the old Quarter Pole (scroll 👉).  While you have a clear shot at the pin from the tee box, going straight at it may put you at risk of the hazards to the left.  The right side undulates and may direct you back towards the pin for a good shot at par.

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!
Come out to Monmouth Park to try out the Jersey Shore Food Truck Festival on Saturday, Sunday and Monday with over 30 food trucks in the festival lot just south of the courses.  And don’t forget to get a round of miniature golf in to kick off the summer!

This week’s hole celebrates the sixth winner of the Triple Crown, Count Fleet.  Foaled in Paris, KY in 1940 (by Reigh Count), Count Fleet was a champion at two with four major stakes wins before winning the 1943 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.  He came back to win the Withers Stakes at Belmont Park two weeks after the Preakness before handily winning the final leg of the Triple Crown by 25 lengths – a race in which he had only two challengers willing to take him on.  He was retired the following year and inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1961.

The Par-2 sixth hole on the Green Course gives you the option to try to go on either side of the hazard in the middle of the fairway.  The safe play is to the left to try to make par; the right side may look tempting to try for a hole-in-one, but a sand trap and the threat of the water lingers.

Happy Mothers’ Day Weekend!
Come celebrate Opening Day at Monmouth Park on Saturday May 10th and celebrate all of the Mothers in your life Sunday May 11th!  (And if they like Mini Golf, moms play for 1/2 price on Sunday!)

This week’s featured hole is the 12th Hole on the Blue Course named after all-time great (and mother) Rachel Alexandra.  After winning the 2009 Kentucky Oaks, Rachel took on and beat the boys in the Preakness Stakes.  That same year she also won Grade I races in the Mother Goose at Belmont, the Woodward at Saratoga, and the Haskell right here at Monmouth Park.  She returned to Oceanport again in 2010, winning the Lady’s Secret Stakes.  She became a mother to Jess’s Dream (named after owner Jess Jackson) in 2012 and again in 2013 to Rachel’s Valentina, who would go on to become a Grade I winner herself.

John was born in Baltimore, Maryland and grew up in Fallston, Maryland on Rochelle Farm. John was raised in a family of thoroughbred racehorse trainers, so, naturally, that was his chosen profession. He started his career in his home state before settling in New Jersey in 1979, lured by the charms of Monmouth Park. While horse racing was his true love, fishing and mini golf were his true passions. For many years, John spoke about building a mini golf course at Monmouth Park. In 2012, that vision became the reality that we all enjoy today. John left us too soon but his family could not be prouder of his accomplishments in life, BGMG being one of them. John, you’ll always have a seat on the bench. ~ John H. Forbes ~ June 20, 1947 – January 31, 2021.

Happy Mother’s Day Weekend!  Moms Play for Half Price Sunday!

In honor of Mother’s Day we’d like to share a little bit about an exceptional female in her own right ~ the Derby-winning filly, Regret. This week’s feature hole is #17 on the Blue Course, named after the great race mare.

Regret was foaled just miles from Monmouth Park at Brookdale Farms (what is now Brookdale Community College and Thompson Park) in 1912.  Running for Breeder/Owner Harry P. Whitney and trained by James Rowe Sr. Regret was the first filly to win the Kentucky Derby in 1915 – and one of only three fillies to win the race in its 150 year history.  In 11 starts she captured nine wins and was never defeated by another female horse.  She was retired in 1917 and went on to produce ten foals including stakes-placed Penitent and stakes winner Revenge.  She was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1957.

The 17th Hole on Blue is a long, fairly straight Par 2 as you head back towards the Clubhouse.  Be sure to get enough on your first shot to get up to the second tier, but be careful to avoid some deep rough on the right side of the fairway as well as a spectator gallery on the left.  A hole in one is certainly in play here when angled correctly, however the safe play may just be getting within tap-in range.

Bluegrass Minature Golf

Miniature golf is a great way to sharpen your putting skills, spend some time with your family, or just get some fresh air. Our two “state of the art” 18-hole courses were designed and built by world famous Harris Golf to provide fun for all ages and skill levels. Each hole has its own unique quality with just the right amount of contour and break to play differently and present a creative challenge.

Both courses have a horse racing theme but you won’t find any gimmicks at Bluegrass Mini Golf. Gone are the windmills and clowns that you’d find on a typical “putt-putt” course. Instead you’ll find a variety of holes, some that require more skill than luck, but all of which will keep you guessing every time you come out to play.

For a behind the scenes look at what it takes to be a mini golf "master" check out the New York Times video on Bluegrass!

Beautifully landscaped with fountains, ponds, and streams, both courses provide a relaxing atmosphere and perfect way to unwind after a long day. Whether you’re out with the kids or looking for a fun date night - miniature golf is truly a sport for all ages that anyone and everyone can enjoy.
