When I was a kid, my grandmother used to sing a song we called “Dainty Little Flowers.” She sang it at all of our birthdays. Whenever a birthday fell on or near the date of a family gathering, all 12 of her children and their spouses would join in. Soon, all 44 grandchildren—and eventually their spouses and children—knew every word and sang along, too.

If family friends were celebrating a birthday, the whole crew would start singing to them. Of course, the birthday person would end up blushing as everyone showered them with attention!

Years later, when I was fronting The Bleeding Knees, we performed the song onstage. All that time, everyone believed it was something my grandmother had made up. As far as our family knew, no one else had ever heard it.

Then, while attending Brookdale Community College and working in the music department, I discovered the original sheet music for a song called “Baby’s Birthday Party.” Its opening words were “Dainty little flowers!”

What a mind-blowing discovery—Grandma hadn’t written it! She had simply replaced “Baby” with the name of whoever was celebrating a birthday.

Ever since that day, I’ve wanted to record the song myself. This past summer, I began creating a children’s picture book using the lyrics. Now the book is in print, and my own recording of the song is in production.

🎶 From my grandmother’s voice to the pages of my very first children’s book. ❤️

Growing up, my grandmother sang this song to her 12 children, 44 grandchildren, 60+ great grands and more, replacing the word “Baby” with each child’s name.

Years later, I discovered the original sheet music while working in the music department at Brookdale Community College.

That little piece of family history stayed with me, and now it’s become Baby’s Birthday Party Day, my debut illustrated children’s book!

I thought I’d share a little performance of the song that started it all. 🎶📖
