The famous Ocean City pier, located at the southern end of the Boardwalk, has become an iconic focal point of OCMD over the past century. Rooted deeply in Ocean City’s history, the pier has served as a home for entertainment, games, amusement park rides, and even the town’s first miniature golf course! The pier was originally built in 1907, but on a much smaller scale at about half the length of the existing pier. Sadly, in 1925 during the great fire of Christmas Eve, the entire structure (including the pier and the building) burned to the ground. The town was quick to spring to action, rebuilding the pier in 1926, along with the larger two story building as the anchor structure. Throughout the 1920s, 30s and 40s, the pier served as the social hub of Ocean City, with a ballroom, bowling alley, and even an ice skating rink! National recording acts such as Duke Ellington performed for visitors along the pier. By the 1950s and 1960s, the pier began to feature amusement rides and games, laying the foundation for the future of the pier as a major amusement destination in Ocean City. The pier was even home to Ocean City’s first miniature golf course, which was built in 1964. Today the pier is a lasting symbol of Ocean City fun, with amusement park rides, games, fishing, and entertainment.
