Mike Rivera is an award-winning comedian, teacher, and father whose relatable humor has entertained audiences across the country for decades. Parents, get your tickets for next Saturday's matinee of RENT (September 5 at 2 p.m.) and take advantage of our Play Date program! We offer this fun, free, on-site theatre workshop for ages 5-12 during the first Saturday matinee of our Mainstage performances. Purchase a ticket for that performance and you can register your child for Play Date during the show.

Play Date is held in Studio A from 1:30 p.m. (half an hour before showtime) until the end of the performance. A team of trained teaching artists from The Academy at Ocala Civic Theatre will provide age-appropriate activities to introduce children to the world of theatre. Join us two weeks from right now for the first OFF BOOK of Season 76! 📖 On Saturday, September 12 at 12:30 p.m., come explore the origins of RENT, our opening musical and a passionate pop-culture phenomenon since its debut.

Winner of the 1996 Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, RENT is based on Puccini’s beloved 1896 opera La Boheme. A century later, composer, lyricist, and playwright Jonathan Larson updated the opera’s setting of the Latin Quarter in Paris to the late 1980s and early 1990s in New York City’s East Village, turning it into a gritty rock musical. It is still the story of impoverished young artists and musicians living la vie boheme, but in RENT these bohemian characters struggle to survive, dream, and create under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. Find out more about Jonathan Larson’s inspiration for his iconic musical – a tale of both tragedy and triumph.

Celebrate 76 years of live theatre in Ocala! Join us on Thursday, October 8 for our second annual Set the Stage Gala to benefit Ocala Civic Theatre.

This sophisticated evening of exceptional camaraderie begins with our social hour at 6 p.m. Step into a magical French world as you enjoy the event’s signature cocktail, a bubbly French 75, while browsing our carefully curated silent auction in Studio B. Then the Civic stage becomes a charming French bistro for dinner, drinks, and sparkling entertainment!

Catered by The Fiery Chef, with a wine selection by Stella’s Modern Pantry, this delicious dinner begins with a variety of amuse-bouches, charcuterie, and salade Lyonnaise. Main course choices are a Boeuf Bourguignon of Fort McCoy Ranch short ribs; Provençal Black Grouper in a light lemon beurre blanc; or Champignons Bourguignon as a vegetarian option. Each entrée is served with pommes purée, haricots verts amandine, and fresh French bread dinner rolls. Dinner concludes delectably with a tarte tatin with rich Calvados caramel.

This evening of exceptional entertainment includes performances of musical selections from our Season 76 musicals – Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical Jr.; RENT; I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change; and Disney’s The Little Mermaid – from some of your favorite Civic performers. The evening also features music by popular local artist Becky Baby.

Phantasmagoria XVII: FRANKENSTEIN… The Birth of Horror
The 17th Year of the Long-Running Central Florida Halloween Tradition!

Journey with critically acclaimed Victorian Horror Troupe PHANTASMAGORIA as they light the candles at the Villa Diodati, to celebrate Mary Shelley’s legendary and iconic tale as well as “The Vampyre” by John Polidori, along with other stories that horrified the nights during that summer when the challenge “We Shall Each Write A Ghost Story” was presented to all in attendance.

The Birth of Horror: June 16, 1816
In the summer of 1816, Mary Godwin (soon to be Shelley), Percy Shelley, Claire Clairmont, John Polidori and Lord George Gordon Byron spent their evenings reading ghost stories from the book “Fantasmagoriana,” when Byron issued the Ghost Story summons. Phantasmagoria is honored (and terrified) to present two tales from that original book – “The Death’s Head” and “The Black Chamber”, along with Byron’s apocalyptic epic poem “Darkness” written later that summer, and of course Polidori’s “The Vampyre,” which set the tone for elegant, stately Vampires, all culminating in Mary Shelley’s classic of horror literature “Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus.”

"Something wicked this way comes…" With original music by Phantasmagoria composer Josh Solomon, choreography by Mila Makarova, stage combat by Bill Warriner, puppets by Nic Parks Puppetry, and all new adaptations and direction this is sure to be a darkly enchanting journey for all.

Called “visually addictive,” Phantasmagoria’s signature blend of evocative storytelling, phantastical dance, large-scale puppetry, projections, original music, and more will bring to life on stage the haunted and horrific tales that mark the most legendary moments in literature – ones that would change the face of horror forever. Bringing the blues to the Civic stage with BACKTRACK BLUES BAND!

Gulf Coast Records artist Backtrack Blues Band has been performing original blues music since 1980, making the group Florida’s longest-running blues band. Backtrack delivers energetic, electric blues in a Chicago blues tradition, with blistering lead guitar (Kid Royal) and blues harmonica (Sonny Charles), soulful vocals, and a seamless rhythm section. It’s exciting blues music at its finest!

This award-winning band has garnered three Tampa Bay Music Awards and won a national songwriting contest for best blues song. Backtrack has released eight albums of chart-topping blues music and was recognized by Downbeat Magazine for best blues album of the year.

🦃 THE SHOW: A terminally woke troupe of theatre artists scrambles to create an elementary-school pageant that somehow manages to celebrate both Turkey Day and Native American Heritage Month – while being historically accurate and offending no one. This may be an impossible task, but these four well-meaning (yet politically insensitive) actors, directors, and teachers bravely bumble through the challenge. Good intentions collide with absurd assumptions in this wickedly funny roast of modern society and performative activism. Penned by Lakota playwright Larissa FastHorse, the show made its Broadway debut in 2023 as the first play by a known female Native American playwright produced on Broadway. OCT is pleased to present the Civic premiere under the direction of Tuscarora theatre artist Vickie Ramirez, director, playwright, and co-founder of Chukalokoi Native Theater Ensemble.
