👀 “Approaches: Abstract Art” is now open in the second-floor Preview Gallery. Drawn from the permanent collection, with additional works by Heather Dawn Batchelor, this exhibit focuses on Abstract Expressionism, a post-World War II movement known for energetic gestures, bold color and expression. Paired with the works are prompts inspired by Transformative Learning Theory, inviting visitors to slow down, reflect and consider new perspectives. There are no right or wrong answers — only opportunities for careful looking and discovery.

Director’s Circle members, there’s still time to RSVP for the second event in our After Hours lecture series. Next Thursday, August 27, join us for a fascinating presentation on maritime art by museum educator Hollis Mutch. Journey through maritime history with works by William Adolphus Knell, Richard Brydges Beechey, Henry Scott and Montague Dawson, exploring legendary ships and events from the Battle of Trafalgar to the Cutty Sark.

Start in the café at 5 p.m. for some charcuterie and wine before the talk begins at 5:45 p.m.

Our summer clay classes for adults begin THIS Saturday! Get your hands dirty in one of two classes led by Dawn Bergstrom. Designed for more advanced students, Dig Deeper meets Saturdays, August 22–September 26, from 10:15 a.m.–12:45 p.m. Wheel Throwing, open to all skill levels, meets Saturdays, August 22–September 26, from 2–4:30 p.m.

Planning ahead for fall? We’ve just added our new schedule of clay classes to the website, including wheel throwing and open studio time.

All clay classes are $265 for members, $310 for non-members.

We’re excited to welcome master storyteller Dr. Caren Neile to the Appleton on the upcoming September 5 Free First Saturday! At noon in the auditorium, discover the legends of Florida — from the Ashley Gang to Bellamy Bridge — in a lively storytelling presentation that explores the enduring power of folklore.

⏰ There’s only one month left to see “My Country, ’Tis of Thee: Celebrating American Art and Design.” Don’t miss this spectacular exhibition featuring 115 works that span more than three centuries of American art and design. From contemporary furniture and Pop Art to historic photographs and documents, discover the many ways art reflects the American experience, with a special look at Florida’s place in our nation’s story.

What a month! In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, the Appleton offered free admission throughout July and welcomed 11,690 visitors through our doors. 🎆🎉 Whether you came to see our special exhibitions, explore the permanent collection, get creative in Summer Art Camp or simply spend some time surrounded by art, thank you for making the Appleton part of your summer. It was a pleasure to see our galleries filled with so many visitors!

⏰ This week is your last chance to see the 2026 Appleton Studio Art Showcase before it closes on August 16! On view in the Education Rotunda, this annual exhibition celebrates the creativity of adults and children enrolled in the Appleton's studio art classes throughout the year. Regular admission fees apply to visit.
