This week we celebrated the success of our 10th Season with our annual End-of-Season Celebration. We honored several board members stepping down from service positions, including Marjorie Bannish after three years as president. We held an induction ceremony for our 2026-27 board members, held a Show & Tell, and ended the Zoom portion with a raffle. We bid our Zoom friend farewell and proceeded with the potluck luncheon. A great way to close the season!

The idea of monumental Roman capitals is intimidating to many calligraphers, but making and arranging small capitals on a page can help us to connect with the fun of lettering while focusing on some basic design principles.

Great for beginners and experienced letterers alike, this class will examine an excellent historical page of text capitals. We’ll also explore the use of small broad-edged and pointed pens in creating texture through the manipulation of letter spacing, color changes, and other design decisions.

In my year long course these are the letterforms I teach my students, as well as a creative and simple way to use them in a layout. I find that they are far less intimidating than the Trajan capitals, much more user-friendly and very practical for introduction to the broad edge brush.

In this class, learn to create a wide-range of marks, from very thin to bold, expressive strokes, using a folded pen. This lettering style is known for its dynamic, organic-looking letters and is celebrated for its versatility. What a great day! Patti, Alison, DeAnna, Terry and Lisa enjoyed interacting with the many visitors to the festival. We lettered “mini chalkboards” instead of bookmarks. Very fun! And we couldn’t miss checking out what the many talented local artists created with chalk! 🎨✍️

We’ll start with the basics - formal letterforms and a simple pressure-and-release technique - before exploring all the possibilities that will bring the letters to life. Along the way you’ll discover a variety of creative variations that will make Roman capitals one of your most expressive and versatile hands. And while these letters may have a reputation for being serious, we’ll have some seriously good fun working with them!
