The idea of monumental Roman capitals is intimidating to many calligraphers, but making and arranging small capitals on a page can help us to connect with the fun of lettering while focusing on some basic design principles.

Great for beginners and experienced letterers alike, this class will examine an excellent historical page of text capitals. We’ll also explore the use of small broad-edged and pointed pens in creating texture through the manipulation of letter spacing, color changes, and other design decisions.

In this class, learn to create a wide-range of marks, from very thin to bold, expressive strokes, using a folded pen. This lettering style is known for its dynamic, organic-looking letters and is celebrated for its versatility. Add Gold Sparkle:  Creative Ways to Incorporate Gold Leaf

Free and open to all! Please join us!
 
With the holidays coming up, Marjorie will explore three different ways of incorporating gold sparkle into your cards or other artwork. By using imitation gold leaf, the cost is minimal. We will discuss which glues (sizes) to use, the different methods of application, and how to successfully handle the five-inch square sheets of imitation gold. These processes are quite simple, and you will gain confidence the more you work with this medium.  

The November meetup, like all of our monthly meetups, will be a hybrid event, available both in-person at the Chelsea Art Center and online via Zoom. Members automatically receive an email with the Zoom link and supply list. Roman capitals can be the most noble and challenging of all letter forms. If you have never done them before or you just need to brush up a bit, this workshop would be ideal. We will start with basic proportions in pencil, then trace over them with a broad edge nib. After lettering the alphabet, we will write quotes on pre-lined paper. Finally, we will spend ample time learning how to subtly articulate the serifs for the individual letters. By the end of the class, you will have the foundation and skills to appreciate and pursue these heroic letters for years to come.

Zentangling Pumpkins
Presented by Janice Shigehara

Learn how to Zentangle a pumpkin. The materials are few and the results can be stunning. Janice has provided a few Zentangle patterns to get started but you can use other patterns as well. The pumpkins can be used in a variety of settings—as a centerpiece along with seasonal squashes and nuts, on the fireplace grouped together or singly to adorn a nightstand or end table. The Zentangle process used on pumpkins can be addicting so you may find yourself making them for gifts as well.  You will also learn how to incorporate lettering on leaves and some decorating ideas for Halloween.
