Woodcarver Mary Myers had always loved toys, especially those with moving parts. After taking a woodcarving course, she decided to make a nutcracker that looked antique. Her first customer was the American Folk Art Museum in NYC: they bought two dozen of her soldiers and licensed her for life to carve nutcrackers and other objects. They were also the first to have her copy a Wilhelm Schimmel eagle; Schimmel was a 19th-century German émigré who used deep, angular knife cuts to articulate his distinctively carved eagles. Many of Mary’s carved birds are inspired by his style.

Growing up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, folk artist Pam Hults was influenced by parents who loved antiques, art, and architecture and by Pennsylvania German food, culture, and people. With a degree in Art, Pam combines her formal training with hands-on experience to create pieces that, while influenced by historic examples, are original and distinct. She works in a variety of genres--traditional, patriotic, whimsical, and seasonal. Her paper cuttings are a hybrid of scherenschnitte and fraktur, using both watercolor and pen and ink to create them. Her husband John has a workshop next to her home studio where he makes frames and turned items.

Fraktur artist Marta Urban has always loved lettering and even as a child signed her name on everything. She saw her first fraktur in her hometown at the Westmoreland (PA) Museum of American Art and was inspired to study why and how they were produced. A self-taught lettering artist, Marta has created frakturs since 1987 using traditional 18th-century techniques with ink and watercolors that feature original Pennsylvania German verses reflecting their values of family, church, and school. She is listed in Early American Life Magazine’s Directory of Traditional American Crafts.

A quilter for more than 30 years, Kathie Ratcliffe makes miniature quilts as wall art. She is self-taught and interprets 18th-19th century quilts in miniature using historically accurate fabrics and authentic color combinations to evoke the regional idioms and fabric trends of the time of the American revolution to the 19th century. The vibrant colors and patterns recall the finest traditions of American quilt art, reflecting the change in style from early chintz quilts to the bold graphics of the late 19th century. The small quilts are offered in hand-grained frames.

Inspired by 1776 Booth—In celebration of our country’s 250th birthday, the Bedminster Traditional Artisan Show is hosting a special booth featuring items inspired by this historic event that are hand-made by the show’s artisans. This penny rug and wool appliqué throw pillow were both made by Amy Staton. The eagle motif on these pieces resembles the ones found on "Union quilts" of the mid to late 1800s of Pennsylvania origin. Early examples of these appliqué quilts were made to commemorate our nation's centennial anniversary.
