Meet Joann! 🦒

This two-year-old giraffe from The Living Desert took her first steps on habitat this week and quickly found her stride, exploring alongside Maggie, the herd’s wise 14-year-old mentor, who helped guide her every step of the way. She’s now out getting to know the rest of the herd and embracing this exciting new chapter. 💛

Joann is a part of a remarkable Bay Area giraffe lineage that connects back to beloved Oakland Zoo giraffe Tiki, making this new chapter especially meaningful, as it is rooted in a long history of care, conservation, and connection.

Read more about Joann’s journey, why she was recommended to join this herd by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan, and what our team is doing to make this introduction a success at www.oaklandzoo.org/news/joann-giraffe

We are very sorry to share the news of the passing of one of the OZ black bears, Tejon.

Our Animal Care team observed a rapid, significant decline in Tejon’s mobility, ultimately becoming hind-limb paralysis. He was immediately immobilized and transported to the Veterinary Hospital for evaluation. Unfortunately, his condition was irreversible.

After careful assessment, we made the difficult but humane decision to euthanize him. As of now, we do not know the cause of his sudden limb paralysis and hope that further testing will provide more insight into what may have caused it.

Tejon came to Oakland Zoo in 2017 with his family, including his mother, Cambria, and his brothers, Kern and Pismo (who passed in 2018), due to human-wildlife conflict. This family was the first to call California Trail home in 2018. Tejon and his family have played an important role as ambassadors for their species, helping educate guests about living responsibly in bear habitat. Through experiences such as Bear Camp, they demonstrated, in memorable and engaging ways, how not to set up a campsite in bear country. Our time with Tejon was far too short, and he will be deeply missed by all who cared for him.

Currently, Cambria and Kern are doing well following Tejon’s passing, but we have also noticed some changes in Cambria's behavior. Cambria developed lameness in her hind limbs, coming out of torpor in late March, and was immediately placed on pain medication. After her exam in May, we diagnosed her with spinal arthritis. She is receiving treatment and being closely monitored, and our veterinarians are working with an outside neurologist for further consultation on the best next steps. As of now, we do not think these cases are related. We will continue to update you on her progress.

We thank you for your support for our staff during this time.

What’s it like INSIDE the chimp habitat at Oakland Zoo? Keeper Bex takes us on a POV tour in this video. As you can see, there’s a lot more to this habitat than what you can see from the public pathways!

Our Animal Care staff make sure there’s always a robust amount of enrichment and structures, to elicit natural behaviors and ensure these chimps are always mentally and physically engaged 🐵

Hard to believe that Crimson was just smaller than this squash!

When he first arrived at the Veterinary Hospital in March, 3-week-old Crimson was emaciated and unable to stand due to the significant injuries to his back leg.

Now, he’s growing fast, exploring his indoor and outdoor access at the hospital, and showing off his bold, sometimes described as ornery, personality! 😋

He still has a long road of recovery ahead, but he’s come a long way already. ❤️

Two desserts are better than one 🍮🍰

Flan and Trifle are a bonded pair of bunny sisters who are ready to bring twice the fun, curiosity, and cuddle time to their future home. These sweet girls love exploring side by side, then settling in together for pets and attention. Wherever one goes, the other is never far behind.

At under a year old, they’re still playful, silly, and full of personality. If you’ve been thinking about adding a little more joy to your life, these two might be the perfect pair.

Come meet Flan and Trifle at Oakland Animal Services!

No, "personal space" is not in their vocabulary. 😊

P.S. There is always a meerkat lookout on duty. Check out the sentry in the back!

We have sad news to share. Last week, Quila, our female juvenile pudu, was found deceased in the habitat before the Zoo opened. This prompted us to examine Riley, Gizmo, and the newest baby. After an examination by Veterinary and Animal Care staff, all three pudus appeared to be in good health. However, prey species often mask illness, and some diseases progress quickly. On Wednesday morning, the newest baby pudu also passed away.

We suspect a bacterial or viral illness, to which juvenile and newborn pudus are more vulnerable. We are awaiting further test results to determine the exact cause of their passing. Animal Care and Veterinary Hospital staff have been closely monitoring parents Riley and Gizmo. As of now, they appear healthy.

This is hard news for our entire Zoo family, as we had just celebrated the birth of our newest pudu baby, whom you all have quickly fallen in love with, both virtually and in-person. We have the honor of caring for these animals every day, but with that responsibility comes the burden of
loss.

Thank you all for your support for our staff and volunteers during this difficult time.

Last week we celebrated TWO very special birthdays on Siamang Island! 💚

Sid turned 10, and Raya is now 3! 🎂🎈

This dynamic duo has had quite the year! After a long introduction process and building trust step by step, it is safe to say they’ve blossomed into the sweetest friends! 💕 It is a joy to hear them singing and see them swinging together every day.

To celebrate, their keepers went all out with an array of decorated gift boxes and creative twists on their daily enrichment to make the day extra special. 🎁✨

And the clear birthday favorite? Frozen sweet potato & banana cakes 🍠🍌 (the video says it all 😋).

Happy Birthday, Sid & Raya! 🎉

CUBDATE: Clover has come a long way since her rescue in March. Look at the difference a few months have made!

As you know, Clover and our other mountain lion rescue, Crimson, have been recovering separately at our Veterinary Hospital. Now that Clover has grown larger and is adapting well to a new setting, it’s time for her to take the next step in her journey!

Though we would have loved for Crimson and Clover to meet and grow up together, we have an obligation to protect Clover’s welfare and wellbeing and cannot hold back her recovery. Because she has grown significantly compared to Crimson and is much further along in her recovery, we have decided not to introduce them and to work with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to find her a new home.

Clover is at the ideal age to be introduced to a companion, and it is our priority to work with CDFW to find her a home where she can be paired with another mountain lion rather than remain alone at this critical step in her journey. Crimson will stay at the Zoo until he achieves all the key milestones necessary before moving to his new home. Until then, we will keep you up to date on next steps for both cubs!
