The Open Storybook Puppet Theatre at Children's Fairyland is turning 60 next year!

Part of the celebration is to feature work from puppeteers that were influenced by their work. As a result, they asked me to design and build puppets for a show, written WAY back in the day by Frank Oz (and Jerry Juhl?) for Oakland's Vagabond Puppets, a last vestige of a W.P.A. Works program. The show is titled "The Dragon Who Wasn't", and it's truly an honor to finally etch my name into Oakland's rich and lush "puppet-tree" (you see what I did there?)

A sample of some of the characters the kids made up for their show this week...

Kitty Pirate, Horse Pirate, Puppy Pirate... you know, some standards.

Then we've got a Dancing Crazy Pirate, Captain Metal Beard, Pirate Spy Girl... and the incredibly handsome Spy Pirate and Professional Model.

Sometimes arts and craft time in classrooms is used to get a piece of curriculum across, or when it's just for art's sake it still has to be justified as learning colors, mastering tools, or following directions. Luckily, I don't have to do that in my classes.

Showing my students materials and patterns, I say...

So, you know where arms and legs go, right?

Right!

OK... Good. Now show me some imagination. Get creative. This is your puppet. It should make YOU happy. As long as it turns out to be a skeleton, I don't care what you do.

One kid asked... Should we even color them in? Bones are white, right?

This isn't biology class, little dude. These skeletons live in OUR world! Do whatever you like. I love the look on their faces at this very point.

This is just one of the delightful skeletons we got today. Some even replaced limbs with other items. Some had hardly any. They were wandering around class saying... Look at mine! It's got (insert individual creative choice.)

I love my job.

This week's featured monster to be defeated in our show is the gargantuan foam-bodied, sea-weed-haired, rubber-band-brained, bow-tie-nosed, pajama-wearing, hat-eating, sea monster from the soapy seas who says, “chickety-chick-chick-chick.”!

Hello dear friends!

I know I'm asking on short notice, but that is on purpose; no one agrees to plans ahead of time if they can help it. And so now I am looking for people who now have NOTHING to do this weekend and want to spend a little time helping kids make personalized puppets of themselves this Saturday, the 31st at the first ever Make San Leandro event! It corresponds with San Leandro's Cherry Festival, so there's something else to do in the area if you find my company too trying.

I am committed to possibly serving 1000 children on this day. I am going to need some help. Really.

Please consider coming down to laugh and play and help cute kids make puppets they will cherish for a long time to come... or until they break them.

Stay the day or just hang out for a couple hours. It's up to you. I'll be there ALL day.

And yes... you can make a puppet too.
