NOW ON VIEW at SLATE Contemporary: "Hannah Franco: Poiesis"

In Hannah Franco’s solo exhibition "Poiesis," Franco presents a new body of work that signals a pivotal moment in her artistic career. The exhibition’s title, "Poiesis" (the root from which we get the word “poetry”) comes from the Greek word for “making”. By definition, poiesis is the process of bringing something which previously did not exist into being. This idea points to a central theme in the exhibition: treating creation not just as an artistic act, but as a way of shaping who we are as well.

SLATE is pleased to present paintings by Steven Hight (.c.hight) on view through October 22, 2026 at 225 West Santa Clara Street lobby in San Jose.

Steven Hight's abstract paintings explore the drama of the natural world through the creation of complex linear frameworks, dynamic patterning and rich color application. Densely layered swathes of paint create complex labyrinths of color and tone that rise, fall, and weave throughout the works. Crisscrossing the surfaces of the canvases, layers of thick pigment speak to a deeper sense of knowing. His paintings suggest there is much to uncover if you spend the time to look.

“My paintings are abstract and rooted in color. This series explores natural environments, looking for hidden structural threads in submerged grids of oyster farms or labyrinthian shapes of branching trees. I am mapping estuaries and woods looking for underlying patterns in the flicker of constant movement and change. I am seeking to mark moments to capture a feeling of enchantment”.

In her solo exhibition Poiesis, Hannah Franco brings her once-hidden washes of color forward as the true subject of the work, revealing a self that had long lived quietly beneath the surface. Honoring the power of softness and vulnerability, Franco pays tribute to the often invisible and systemically undervalued domestic labor and love women have long contributed to their communities.
