Rachel Ungerer Artist Rachel Ungerer is a Bay Area local queer disabled artist. Rachel Ungerer’s work explores the way that we as people are simultaneously unique and the same.

No matter how far away or different we are there is something in a stranger’s face that is recognizable. Through our infinite diversity we are all linked by our common humanity. We all experience joy and sorrow, love and defeat and a world of emotions in between. This honest human connection is at the core of Ungerer’s artwork. Rachel Ungerer is a Bay Area native and practicing San Francisco artist. Throughout her childhood Ungerer was involved in art, creating everything from collage to stained glass. This passion drove Ungerer to earn her major in Art from the University of California at Los Angeles and specialize in painting. Ungerer is inspired by German Expressionism and Impressionist portraiture. Ungerer is an artist living with a disability that is not visible by looking at her. Her work was created while in chronic pain and with limited use of her hands. By identifying as someone with an “invisible disability,” Ungerer hopes to bring awareness to invisible disabilities and eliminate the negative stigma surrounding disability in our culture.

“How Are You”
Opening Friday, March 7th, 5PM-8PM in conjunction with
At ***rartsfeatured

Art. Performance. Installation.

At the end, you’ll be asking “How Am I, Really?”

22 fabulous artists from around the Bay Area, curated by Rhys Rainer, answer the question:

“HOW ARE YOU?”
An Artful Response to a Complex Question

When you read those words above, what comes up for you? Sometimes asked from a place of care, others as a de facto pleasantry, that question can be difficult to answer honestly and fully, especially these days. What do you really want to say? What do really want to hear when you ask it? How do you express a concept so multifaceted? Who is asking it, and when? Let the How Are You in, and then let it out.

Accessibility: ground floor entrance, when chair accessible, masking encouraged, seating provided

“Acts of Love” by Rachel Ungerer. How do we express and share love?

[Image Description: A beautiful disabled woman is getting ready for a night out. She is wearing short hair & a dress. She sits in her wheel chair as her partner puts her heals on. Acrylic on canvas 20”x20”.]

As a disabled person myself, I often need assistance from others. My partner loves sharing love through acts of service. My openness to receive their love is a gift for them. Just as their helping get my access needs met is their gift to me. Our interdependence builds our love. Our connections build our communities.

See “Acts of Love” in the 38th annual Mujeres Exhibition, “DERECHOS”, at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts in SF. (MARCH 8-April 13th)

This painting was inspired by the powerful disabled activist & artist Thank you for sharing your inter-abled love story and making a safer space for all of our disabled loves.

Guest Lectured at !!! Discussed systemic oppression towards disabled q***r women & my art as activism!

These students give me life!!! They’re excited to learn about the harmful systems in the medical field so they can be the change. We discussed celebrating q***rness & our differences as paths toward self acceptance & collective empowerment.

Based on my experiences with discrimination, I use my art to challenge implicit biases by sharing loving disabled q***r stories.

Thanks Becky Richardson for inviting me to your class “Patient-Centered Stories, Research, & Advocacy” in the “Notion in Science Communication” track. 💕 so many premed students!

I have so much love in my disabled q***r heart for all of you!

Let’s plan my next guest lecture. 🌈💕🏳️‍⚧️
