There's still time to see Daniel McClain's cryptic and meditative work in Lost and Found at Transmission Gallery.

Come in to see in person the full experience of the exquisite detail in the acrylic and graphite paintings and framed drawings on view through Sept 12th with the gallery open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 1-5 pm.

What looks like collage, is replicated by hand, down to the tape and graph paper in paintings balancing along the edges of hyper-realism and the abstract interplay of their evocative components.

Also at Transmission, concurrent solo show, Hands of the Maker, drawings by Aldo Farnsworth, and in our video exhibition space Peter d'Agostino's World-Wide-Walks SFBay, a 6 minute video walk about the Bay.

Be sure to step into the Office to see more art including one more piece by Dan McClain with Little Dorothy and Toto.

Clicking through here:
McClain's piece, Gift, 40 x 60, acrylic and graphite pencil on canvas ( this is the one referencing Frank Stella, Black Paintings)

Nardis, 40 x 33, acrylic and graphite pencil on canvas (this one with the beautiful re-creation of an Alice through the Looking Glass illustration and the Carl Andres In His Time book cover - note, minimalist sculptor Carl Andres was recognized for arranging unjoined mass produced materials in ordered and grid format sculpture)

Followed by Winter, 13 x 25, acrylic and graphite pencil on canvas ( note the gridded drawing of a snowman and replication of a well worn copy of On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century by Timothy Snyder. There is a relationship between snowmen and Snyder's challenge to authoritarianism. Plus, maybe it's time to (re)read this book).

Come in to see Daniel McClain's work in Lost and Found if you can.
One of two concurrent solo shows at Transmission, it's well worth seeing in person.

The exquisite technical process at play in McClain’s paintings is elusive at first. With their striking imagery, bold planes and graphic color, they initially suggest collages assembled from found images, fragments, and printed material. Only after spending time with them does it become clear that every element has been re-created by hand. What appears to be a collage is, in fact, a meticulous replication of one. A strip of masking tape turns out to be paint. A penciled note is drawn in graphite. A battered corner is painted. Printed text is hand-drawn graphite as well.

Yes, every piece and detail is acrylic or graphite pencil on canvas, or in the case of the book cover drawings, graphite pencil on found papers.

Here's just a glimpse:

- McClain with Wanderer, 2026, acrylic and graphite pencil on canvas, 30x30
- Garden, 2025, acrylic and graphite on canvas, 60x40
- de Kooning, 2026, graphite pencil on found paper, 7.75x11
- McClain with framed drawings Herzog and Duchamp
- Herzog (Dedicated to Marc Lesueur), 2026, graphite pencil on found paper, 10.5x8.5

See the work Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 12- 5pm, through Sept 12th.

Congrats to Aldo Farnsworth on his solo exhibition of drawings, Hands of the Maker: A Show of Hands.

Gallery Hours: Thurs - Sat, 12-5 pm

The works focus on the hands of makers captured with close attention to intimate details: the nuance of gesture, the particular way they hold a pencil or object, often with glasses at hand, and drawn on paper handmade by Farnsworth.

While these drawings portray the particular hands of artists and makers well known in the Bay Area, with the full list on our website, they also stand in for something more universal and personal at the same time: a sense of our own hands making, touching holding, and engaging with the world.

Please join us for the Artist's Reception:
August 15th from 2-5 pm

"Hands of the Maker: A Show of Hands "presents twelve drawings by Aldo Farnsworth, made with graphite, quarried chalk, and colored pigments on linen and h**p paper.

The works focus on the hands of makers captured with close attention to intimate details: the nuance of gesture, the particular way they hold a pencil or object, often with glasses at hand. These quiet arrangements suggest drawing, seeing, measuring, and making—the physical evidence of each subject’s creative work and daily life.

See the work Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 12- 5 pm through September 19th.

All are welcome to stop by the Artist's Reception for concurrent solo shows, Saturday, August 15th, from 2-5 pm to greet the artists and enjoy the light refreshments.
