Join us for Saturday, August 22, 2026 for ArtistSpeak! A discussion and screening of From These Roots (1974), William Greaves' award-winning portrait of the Harlem Renaissance.
After the film, resident expert Carol Belle-Thomas Moss and Co-host Latisha Baker will spotlight four artists often left out of the Harlem Renaissance story: painters Laura Wheeler Waring and Lois Mailou Jones, and sculptors Meta Vaux Warrick Fuller and Selma Burke. We'll trace how their influence carried forward — Jones taught sculptor Elizabeth Catlett at Howard University, who in turn mentored art historian Samella Lewis.
Directed by pioneering filmmaker William Greaves and narrated by actor Brock Peters, with an original score by ragtime legend Eubie Blake, From These Roots tells the story of 1920s Harlem entirely through period photographs — many by the celebrated photographer James Van Der Zee. Winner of 22 international film festival awards, it remains one of the definitive portraits of the Harlem Renaissance, bringing to life the era of Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, and W.E.B. Du Bois.

Join our guest Patrick Banks for “Everyone is a Collector” P Banks

Everyone Is A Collector is built around a simple but powerful idea: collecting art isn’t reserved for a select few. It can begin with a single piece that speaks to you, and we will be in a warm, accessible space to explore that—through conversation, community, and artists.
We will feature two French artists whose work I’m happy to introduce to the Bay Area:
Alexis Stephens — French‑Jamaican painter whose practice grew out of the Paris hip‑hop dance scene. His canvases feel like movement suspended in air: gestural, rhythmic, and full of kinetic energy. Working in acrylic, graphite, oil, and crayon, he layers marks that read like choreography—raw yet controlled, alive without chaos. His work has been especially meaningful for new collectors. A file with details about the limited‑edition signed and numbered prints available at the salon is attached. Artist site: https://www.alexisbuststephens.com/
Jules Be Kuti — an Afro‑French artist whose graphite and mixed‑media drawings center tenderness, emotional nuance, and the interior lives of Black men and their children. His portraits capture quiet moments of vulnerability, joy, and connection—scenes rarely foregrounded in contemporary portraiture. Through subtle shifts of tone and line, he creates compositions that feel intimate, assured, and deeply human. Artist site: https://julesbekutiart.wordpress.com/

This is a replica of one of Augusta Savage’s most celebrated works called The Harp. It was exhibited at The World’s Fair of 1939 in New York then destroyed shortly after. Why? She also mentored many well known artists whose work has been shown in museums for decades. Why don’t we know more about her life and contributions to the art world? We will explore this Saturday with educator Carol Belle Thomas Moss.

Documentary will begin by 2:30pm. Seating is limited.

5/30 at RBA Creative, 2 to 5pm

Join the Black Women’s Art Collective, EVOAK! and RBA Creative for an afternoon of film, conversation, and community at ArtistSpeak!, a public forum on the arts and contemporary issues. This month we’ll be presenting a screening of Searching for Augusta Savage, a 24-minute documentary on the groundbreaking Harlem Renaissance artist that investigates why, and the larger question of how, history decides whose legacy gets preserved.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with educator and resident expert Carol Belle Thomas Moss.

Mark your calendars and bring a friend!
