Awesöme Orchestra’s own composer, arranger, and Low Brass Ambassador J. Maddox shares how Dimitri Shostakovich sowed seeds of Resistance in his Fifth Symphony.

“On the evening of January 26th 1936 Dmitri Shostakovich received a telephone call that would turn his world upside down.

At the time he was far away from his home city of Leningrad, touring Russia and giving concerts of his music. The tour seemed to be one more highlight in the career of a successful composer: Shostakovich earned the respect of Soviet artists, fellow composers, and even Communist Party leader Joseph Stalin viewed his music favorably. His opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk became a sensation, and was enjoyed by audiences all over Russia since its 1934 premiere. The latest stop on the tour brought him into Moscow, the capital city and the heart of Soviet Russia….

Awesöme Orchestra is honored to be collaborating again with vocalist and arranger for the Stevie Wonder classic “If It’s Magic” as well as guest vocalist, violist, and arranger .lawrence.1 will be performing his stirring arrangement of Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” with . Also, as a special sneak-peak of our 2025 season, we’ll be premiering a new arrangement by .rillera of an Aretha Franklin classic “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” with Bay Area vocalist .

Alongside our Artistic Director and Associate Artistic Director Brian Adam McCune, we’re honored to welcome back three local conductors who have long been part of the Awesöme Orchestra Collective community - Sue Crum, Martha Stoddard, and Dr. Sixto F. Montesinos Jr. who will lead the orchestra through new pieces by celebrated Bay Area composer Gabriela Lena Frank, .music , and .

Today, Giving Tuesday, kicks off our End-of-Year Fundraiser to help Awesöme Orchestra raise $40,000 to fund our incredible 2025 Season! A donation of any amount will help us keep the sheet music flowing, cover the rental fees for our rehearsals and sessions, create more opportunities for local composers, arrangers, and guest artists, and welcome thousands of Bay Area musicians into our growing musical community.

Announcing our 10-Year Anniversary Season!! 🎉

Can you believe it?! What started ten years ago as a casual musical experiment between a few dozen friends has grown into a community orchestra with over 3,500 participating musicians, local guest artists, composers, and conductors! We can’t wait to see what the next ten years of adventures will look like with y’all!

To celebrate this incredible milestone, our 10-Year Anniversary 2023 Season is packed with everything that has made us Awesöme throughout the years. We’ll be revisiting some of our favorite venues, playing our most popular pieces, and showcasing members of the community from the last decade. It’s an Awesöme Season unlike any other. We’re also planning a big 10th Anniversary party over the summer. More details coming soon.

Today we’re announcing Sessions 86-91 via our email listserv, as well as our End-of-Year Concert (which will actually be at the end of the year this time around 😂.), but fear not—we will have more sessions this year! We’re just waiting to confirm all the details for Sessions 90, 92, and 93 before we announce them.Thank you for making the last decade truly amazing. We can’t wait to continue making music together in 2023 and beyond.
