ROON! The most requested Tuneshine feature of all time is now here. To celebrate, get $40 off through May 26 with code ROON40.

If you’re an audiophile, you’ve probably heard of (or currently use) Roon. It’s one of the best ways to stream high-quality audio around your house.

Tuneshine now natively supports Roon. It shows up as an extension in your Roon settings, and you can pick up to 16 zones that will have their artwork shown on the Tuneshine.

When using Tuneshine in Roon mode, it’s completely independent of any servers—it runs entirely on your Lan and updates almost instantly from your local Roon core.

This involved rewriting almost every feature of how Tuneshine works, and it will make it way easier to support other media servers in the past. Got a favorite? Let me know 💬

I’m trying to make Tuneshine work for as many different ways to listen to music as possible, but I’m just one guy and I have to prioritize what makes the most sense for customers.

But I’ve just added a way to integrate new music sources and add other new features to your Tuneshine.

If you download the latest firmware update on your device, you can use an API to control your Tuneshine and send your own images to it. Maybe you have a special way to get album art for your music setup, or maybe you want to display other information.

Check the help button in the app for info on the API, and give it a try with your favorite LLM coding tool and see if you can build something that adds to your Tuneshine experience!

Also—this feature paves the way for more integrations with media servers in the future.

I wanted to make Tuneshine because album art just looks great on these bright, lo-fi LED panels. And as much as I try to stay focused on music, I just can’t resist adding a little extra fun to the Tuneshine to let you show videos, Live Photos, and GIFs on there for when you’re not playing any music.

If you upload a video, it’ll get slowed down with a little fade effect. Right now there’s no way to control it, but I’ve done some testing and I think it looks better this way. If you really want precise control you can upload an animated GIF (of a reasonable size) or a 64x64 animated webp to get full control and optimization.

If you have a Tuneshine, it’s because you love music. But there are probably some other things you love in your life, so why not see what it looks like to put your latest video or Live Photo of a precious moment in your life?

Some thoughts on CES and the state of the consumer audio industry. Shoutout for being the only good tech I saw.

If you want this, better order it now—pre-orders end today ->

I don’t know if I should even be showing you this because maybe you’ll decide to buy it instead of a Tuneshine…

But I just can’t resist a small hardware company making something so unexpected and delightful

Sleevenote is the most original music player I’ve seen since the original iPod. Some people might be focused on which players have the absolute best specs, but I don’t think connecting emotionally with music really has anything to do with sample rates and DAC specs.

Sleevenote is great because it helps you connect with the music in a new way, and Tom and the team are working with artists to bring some of the best parts of the physical media experience to your pocket.

So you can finally see the handwritten notes, lyrics, behind-the-scenes photos and all the stuff that used to make buying a record so special—now on the best-looking mp3 player out there.

I pre-ordered a Sleevenote and if you like Tuneshine you’re probably going to want to as well. Link is in the bio

I realized I have a pretty non-standard audio setup—it’s not too fancy and it sounds great. Instead of using a big stereo receiver, I have a stereo mixer going in to desktop audio amplifier.

I love this because I never have to switch sources. With each audio source I have, I can just start playing and instantly hear the sound—and they all have their own audio controls anyway so I never have to touch the mixer or amplifier.

I find this to be a huge quality of life improvement—if I want to put on music when I’m sitting on my couch, I never have to fiddle for the remote.

This exact setup might not work for you—maybe you have no turntables so you don’t need analog audio at all, or you have all this plus a cable box and so you need more controls. But the point is that most receivers are going to have stuff you don’t need—so you might be able to get by by combining a few components tailored to what you need.

Do you think this would work for you? Am I doing something terrible that I don’t even know about it? Let me know, I’d love to hear what you think.
