Super excited to have more art and zine programming than ever at Oakland Creates 2025! Zine making workshop with Lauren Davis and a paint pen workshop with Eugene Randolph Young. More about Eugene and Lauren.
Eugene's bio, "Eugene Randolph Young is an educator, cartoonist, illustrator, graphic designer, and entertainment artist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is best known for his independent science fiction and fantasy art that is inspired by indigenous lore, 80s cyberpunk, 50s pin-up art, and afrofuturism. Eugene started drawing around age seven and cites cartoons, superhero comics, science fiction films, manga, and anime as his main influences.
Eugene’s Afromancers IP explores the aesthetics, customs, and technologies of African and African-American hair culture through the popular formats of science fiction, comics, and animation. The Afromancers Primer was nominated for a 2024 Glyph Comics Award for Best Artist. His recent work also includes the groundbreaking Heavy Experimental Mobile Platform (HXMP) series which is an homage to his love of Japanese mech designs from the 1980s and diversity in the female form.
Eugene completed his MFA in Illustration at the Academy of Art University, BFA in Graphic Design with distinction at the California College of Arts and Crafts, AA in Graphic Design at City College of San Francisco, and graduated from Berkeley High School. He has taught at Dominican University of California, the California College of the Arts, City College of San Francisco, and currently serves as Assistant Professor of Design Visualization in the School of Design at San Francisco State University.

Lauren's bio, "Lauren Davis almost became a lawyer, but found that her love of research and sharing weird facts was better suited to comics. She is a longtime organizer of San Francisco Zine Fest and collected, edited, and published the comics anthologies The Comic Book Guide to the Mission and Sci-Fi San Francisco. Along with Mel Hilario and Katie Longua, she is part of the Triple Dream Comics collective. Together, they created the graphic novels Debian Perl, Digital Detective and Agent Cupcake, as well as the Eisner-nominated short story "Trickster, Traitor, Dummy, Doll." Lauren lives in Berkeley with a tall human, a small human, and a flatulent Boxer."
