‘Audio Processing’ (2016-2026)
(tw; mental illness)
I started this piece in 2016. At the time I was suffering from post partum and didn’t really know much about my own brain. I was not yet diagnosed with audhd or synesthesia so I was just “a pleasure to work with”-ing through life. Masking became too hard and I couldn’t figure out why.
I had only painted the outline of the subject covering her ears, but I got overwhelmed with it bc I didn’t understand myself, so it went into my stack of unfinished pieces (which ended up moving from house to house 4 times with me).
I found it again yesterday and worked on it for about 6 hours. Being armed with my diagnosis’s and a better understanding of how to manage my disorders, I felt like I was finally ready to finish this piece. While I feel like she is not marketable, it was a very healing experience for me to translate how when I become overstimulated with audio and visual, I feel like there’s lightning in my brain and a shot down my center.
If anyone else out there struggles with audio visual processing, synesthesia, or any kind of neuro spice, please know that you’re not alone 🫶
