The Printmakers Left is a collaborative team of artists, architects, writers, scholars and poets who have worked together for over twenty years on a variety of exhibitions, installations, portfolios and books. The group, ever evolving, is composed of University of Virginia faculty, alumni, visiting artists and friends. The colophon in each volume lists all participants.
The nature of The Printmakers Left is to work collaboratively. After a theme or project is decided upon, often a lengthy procedure, the artists begin to talk and send things to each other to work on. Ideas are shared and developed by working together. As much as possible members gather in ateliers to work together. Individual artists often complete their own works within the overall group dynamic. In this way we hope to inspire each other. Often a box of works in progress travels among the various members of the group, each contributing to this growing and evolving collection. We are simply willing to work this way as gradually a structure emerges organically. Two or three or more artists have worked together on many of the book pages. Likewise, the collation of the materials and the editorial process itself is collaborative.
You can see some of The Printmakers Left's publications, and purchase them for your own collection, at this year's Codex Book Fair, coming up April 10 - 13 in Richmond, California. Information about Codex can be found here: https://www.codexfoundation.org/codex-2022
