Choreographer | HOUSTON THOMAS | Summer Season 2024

Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Houston’s dance journey began with the Joffrey Ballet Outreach Program, later studied at the Joffrey Ballet Academy of Dance and the Chicago High School for the Arts. After training at the School of American Ballet, he joined the Dresden Semperoper Ballett, rising to second soloist during his ten years with the company. His performances in works by George Balanchine, Sir Frederick Ashton, William Forsythe, and others earned him acclaim, including a nomination for “Best Male Performance” at the Dance Europe Critic Choice Awards.
Houston premiered his first work, “Moonlit Variants,” for the Semperoper Ballet Young Choreographers in 2018. Houston has since then created works for The Washington Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, ABT Studio Company, New York Choreographic Institute, Ballet San Antonio, Joffrey Ballet Studio Company, Hamptons Dance Project, and The Juilliard School,

In 2022, his piece “Follow the White Rabbit” won at the Young Emergent Choreographers Contest. in Biarritz, France, earning him a commission for “SKYWATCHER” at the Opera National de Bordeaux.

We’re pleased to announce that Kobe Courtney has joined Ballet22 and will perform in our 2024 Summer Season performances in August

KOBE ATWOOD COURTNEY was introduced to dance through Richmond Ballet’s Outreach program Minds in Motion. They trained with Richmond Ballet, under the encouragement of Jasmine Grace. They finished their training at San Francisco Ballet School. There, they were fortunate to perform pieces such as Balanchine’s “Stars and Stripes” and Jiri Kylian’s “Sarabande”. While also studying ballet they had the opportunity to choreograph multiple pieces on their peers, as well as train as a teaching apprentice under Jeffery Lyons. They then spent two years working with Orlando Ballet and their school. They were able to learn from many different works such as “Lyric Pieces” by Jessica Lang and “Lambarena” by Val Caniparoli. They continued their career with Festival Ballet Providence, where they were able to dance leading roles in pieces choreographed by artists like Yury Yanowsky, Ja’ Malik, and Lia Cirio. After Leaving Providence, they moved to NYC to work as a member of Complexions Contemporary Ballet. Touring internationally under the direction of Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson. They currently work as a freelance artist and are embarking on their Choreographic career. They’ve had the opportunity to work with MOBBallet (Memoir of Blacks in Ballet) in their “Pathway to Performance” course. Some other highlights of their choreographic career include, setting work for Rhode Island Women’s Choreography Project, as well as being apart of Complexions Contemporary Ballet’s first CHOREO-LAB.

The 2024 Summer Season is co-directed by Lorris Eichinger, Daniel R. Durrett, and Theresa Knudson and presents works by Houston Thomas, William Forsythe, and Christian Denice, along with an excerpt from the Romantic era ballet, Giselle.
August 9-11 we’re thrilled about these performances coming up and hope you’ll join us!

Victor Maguad started dancing in Manila Dance Center at the age of 7 under the tutelage of Luther Perez, Tony Fabella, and Eddie Elejar. He continued his dance training at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Dance School in 2004 with Noordin Jumalon. He was promoted as an Apprentice of Ballet Philippines in 2011, as Junior Company Member in 2012, Senior Company in 2013, Soloist in 2014, and a Principal Dancer in 2015. He performed most of the classical full length ballets and other contemporary works from local and international guest choreographers. He was also a member of Les Ballet Eloelle/Grandiva, an international all male ballet touring company under the direction of Victor Trevino. He joined Cultural Center of the Philippines Dance Workshop in 2020, a special project from the National Artist for Dance of the Philippines Alice Reyes. He joined Sacramento Ballet for the 21-22 season under the direction of Anthony Krutzkamp. He was featured in Chrysalis, Catalyst, and Beer & Ballet for the season-ending productions of the company.
