I haven't given up hope. I've only given up on it happening in the Bay Area. .I'm moving to Santa Cruz next month, where a lot more folks are motivated to organize a collective of industrial artists. Wish us luck!

Unfortunately, haven't found a new location for our collective. Time is short folks. We have one month left here at American Steel. BUT, we're not gonna leave if we have no new home! We'd appreciate all the support you can give. Spread the word, we need 16,000 to 20k industrial space. High ceilings! Outdoor yard. Thank you!

Found an awesome building we're trying to lease. However, The available power is only 400 amps. Anyone know how quick can the power be upgraded?

Hi Friends of Bay City Creatives!
We've been trying to keep together the little bit of community left after the dissolution of American Steel Studios [2016]. [http://americansteelstudios.com] We miss it terribly and we know you do too! We will never forget what American Steel was in all it's glory and all the amazing experiences and memories created. Yet it's not completely done because now is an opportunity to create a NEW vision of something even more inclusive and spectacular...IF YOU WANT IT!
Our search for a new industrial space is not going well and time is short. We have been facing many limitations and road blocks, like having enough funds for a deposit on a large scale space.
The Pied Piper must first have the flute!

15k - 25k sq ft., $1.50 or less per s.f., ceiling 22ft minimum clearance, outdoor fenced yard. Big power.. 400 amps minimum.

UPDATE ~ May 27, 2022
We are frantically searching for a new location to move our collective of small businesses and professional artists.

Unfortunately we are now down to only 15 businesses in our group. With such limited time left (3 months) some folks decided to leave the area because there’s very little affordable space available in Oakland. So far, the rates are $2 + per sf to sublet.

We have run into a few challenges during our search for leasing a large industrial space (20k sf). Most owners we chat with are NOT interested in leasing to a “collective” of businesses despite our excellent credit, our long standing record of tenancy at American Steel or that we plan to form an LLC with just two individuals signing a lease. We have $$$ for deposit!

STILL NO ASSISTANCE FROM THE CITY OF OAKLAND!!
The city hasn’t lifted a finger to advocate on our behalf, to speak with owners, or even to simply spread the word of our need for support. It’s evident the City only concern with bringing in THE NEW BIGH $$ and not retaining existing long-standing successful small business.

This is why we need to BUY a building and form a “business association”.
Unfortunately, we currently do not have any equity partners.

Sorry to report but numerous small businesses are leaving Oakland.
T.C. Steel was a tenant in American Steel industrial warehouse for 20+ years offering structural fabrication services to SF, Oakland and the surrounding cities. They moved to Santa Rosa, Ca.

O2 Treehouse is a made to order custom tree house fabrication business who was a tenant inside American Steel for hmmm, 6 years? Sorry to have lost their talented design skills to Petaluma!

Many other folks split up and moved out solo to other parts of the East Bay. I believe some are considering a move to M0xy Studios.
A few were lucky to find available space in the same area.

I haven’t heard details from anyone else. People just slowly disappear.

There are still about 60% businesses, artists, and other tenants still looking for new home. Hopefully we can find something in enough time we can avoid shuttering our activities permanently.

My plan B is to put stuff in storage and go back to freelance office work.
Unfortunately, the Apprentice program for teens I had going will have to stay on the shelf too, AND the kids “Metal Art” summer camp class will wait too. I don’t think I’ll be able to offer the AirBnB one day Metal Sculpture class anymore either. A lot of students waiting for me to return will be sad…And so will I!
