What you’re seeing here are gobs of waterproof glue that were applied by a “professional” repair shop. This nasty stuff will need to be removed before this cello can be reassembled. There will be labor intensive elbow grease going into this job that will not be completely compensated. I guess that’s what they mean by take the bad with the good. Wish me luck… I’m going in!!!

Ha!! Those old busted bridges come in handy for all sorts of tasks!
One of my carved rental basses getting some cracks repaired and seams sealed… Before the face goes back on, I’ll size or seal the entire interior of the bass with a thin gelatin solution to help it retain moisture a little better. This work is never charged to the customer which in this case is a school district… it’s baked into the yearly rental fee.
I’ll admit this year’s cold winter has been a challenge with seasoning issues, there hasn’t been a single day where there isn’t a disassembled bass or cello, usually several strewn about the shop and I think I’ve gone through nearly a pound of hide glue!! Well, spring is almost here. Phew!!

Well, the blocks have all been trimmed, sized and sealed, and the top table has been successfully glued back into place. One can only hope and pray that the school that owns this bass will properly humidify her!

I received this bass for repair, an Eastman VB605 dated 2023. The endpin block was improperly repaired and the loose rib and lining were filled with glue. After the old glue was thoroughly cleaned out and the rib, lining and seam were all realigned, I began going over the entire instrument and found the ribs had all receded and become shorter than the blocks( this is due to improper aging and shortcomings in the gluing process). We will correct these issues at no additional charge to the customer simply because there is no reason to place the table back on with these issues laying in wait for more problems to occur.
PLEASE BE SURE TO HUMIDIFY YOUR INSTRUMENTS DURING THE WINTER SEASON!!

A new chalk-fit bass bar for this Pre-war Hornsteiner cello. During the course of a previous repair (anonymous luthier, of course), half of the original bass bar was removed and replaced with a myriad of oak cleats and popsicle sticks.
I often repair these old cellos at a steep discount so that these valuable educational tools can be enjoyed for another generation.
