Gerry O'Neill, Certified Zentangle Teacher

Gerry O'Neill, Certified Zentangle Teacher Zentangle is a relaxing, fun, and easy to learn art form that anyone can do, regardless of talent, training, or experience. Boy, did that make a difference.

I teach the Zentangle Method to groups and individuals through both in-person and Zoom classes. WE ALL HAVE A ZENTANGLE® JOURNEY STORY, I guess. From the time I was a little kid, I believed I had no artistic talent and no innate creative ability. My siblings seem to have been gifted with all the available art/music genes. Then in 2014 my artist sister dragged me to Zentangle, kicking and screaming

all the way, "I can't draw, I can't draw, I don't even want to try!!!" Then I did my first Zentangle tile with her, and suddenly it was, "I CAN DRAW!!!" No judgement, no mistakes - anyone of any age that can hold a pencil can learn to tangle. In 2015, after over a year of teaching myself from books, I took zentangle.com's advice and signed up for a Introductory Zentangle class from a local CZT®. I learned that Zentangle is not just a hobby, but a method, a philosophy, a way to relax and not worry any more about whether I am creative or whether I am an Artist. Why the title "Artist" makes any difference, I don't know - we are all artists and creative by nature. It's the expression of that artistry and creativity that most people have forgotten how to do. So to spread the Zentangle Method® and that wonderful philosophy, I completed four days of teacher training and am now a CZT myself. I offer private and group lessons from beginner to advanced levels in the Oak Ridge area, and will shortly begin teaching at ORICL, the Oak Ridge Institute for Continued Learning. I will teach any age from children to seniors. Please contact me by email or Messenger to book classes, find out more about Zentangle, and inquire about pricing. I also have official Zentangle supplies available for purchase. I'm looking forward to tangling with you!

Here are two tiles I auditioned for my intermediate level Zendala class that met yesterday. Same string, different tangles. Finally chose the one on the right, except I also gave the class a chance to use Renaissance tiles and techniques. Haven't finished the tile I started while teaching the class, but I will, and will post.

I've decided to teach a class on the "TranZending" technique I used on the tile below. It will be an ORICL class sometime this Fall. Don't know yet whether I'll teach this tile or not (I want to make sure it wasn't a tile from another CZT's class first), but the technique will be similar. BTW, also planning a class on Gelly Rolls!

A tile I did some time ago, but just finished. This is a technique called "tranzending" and the tangle on top is Ratoon, a Zentangle original. I can't remember if this was a workshop tile or not, but if it was, would the CZT who taught it let me know?

Two weeks ago I taught a class at ORICL on the tangle "Paradox." This is a tile I did to demonstrate what could be done by manipulating the tangle. I'm calling this one "Follow the Yellow Brick Road," and Paradox is the tangle that makes up the "road." Other tangles are Ginili, Poppins, and BBs.

Yesterday I taught an "Introduction to Zentangle" class at ORICL (Oak Ridge Institute for Continued Learning) here in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This is a mosaic of the art produced by the students in a 2-hr class. At the beginning of the class, most of the students said they could not draw! I teach regularly at ORICL, but also do group and private classes for all ages here in Oak Ridge. PM me if interested or for more information on learning the Zentangle Method where you live.
