To our Spice of Life show fans and followers: I dont get political on our show or our pages and except in certain cases, I plan to keep it that way. This is one of those cases: as the creator of The Spice of Life Show and my own personal beliefs, I will be deleting our Facebook and Twitter pages on Friday, November 13th, 2020. Instagram won't be far behind as it is owned by Facebook. I am still hoping to get back to filming next year and releasing videos. As far as social media goes, it is in my own opinion that I believe sometimes you have to go against what is popular when you choose to stand up for what you believe in, even if it means you have to remove your best method(s) of advertising. Social media platforms will always come and go, but I will always stand for what I believe is right. I simply wanted to let everyone know so you won't think we dropped off the face of the earth when you can't find us on social media.
P.S. We are still on YouTube.com/TheSpiceOfLifeShow

Cracked open a new bottle of hot sauce this evening. Hot Ta Molly tastes pretty good on a slice of pepperoni pizza. I can't wait to pour this on some tacos at a later date. Just gotta make sure I save some for the show when we start filming again!!!

Finished off another bottle from a local company, . This is a good sauce on pizza, but I don't taste pineapple on this one. By itself, I can taste a hint of it. Check it out for yourself and let me know what you think!!!

Cracked open a new bottle tonight and straight out of the bottle, this one has some heat from the Ghost Pepper and Fire Roasted Habaneros. On pizza, well, I probably added more than I should have, but here goes....

I believe I share a similar story with a lot of other spice community product reviews found on YouTube when it comes to what originally inspired me to start this journey. However, I have changed my direction a few times since starting. As I started to plan everything out and dig deeper into it all, I started to meet some incredibly amazing people behind these products, which has brought us to where we are today.
Prior to March 2019, having spent the last year or two as a caregiver for my dad, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s Disease along with Osteoarthritis in his back which caused him to eventually walk completely hunched over, I had plenty of time spent in my studio watching videos. Towards the end of dad’s last couple of months here, I had stumbled across the First We Feast: Hot Ones videos and found myself binge watching every episode. I can now say I have officially watched every episode and it is where the original inspiration was birthed from.
One night when a friend was over, Michael Zepeda, I showed him a couple videos and told him I wanted to try something like this. He liked the idea despite, at the time, having a very low tolerance for spicy food. Had it been up to him, we would have started shooting that week, but me, being the perfectionist I tend to be, needed more time to plan it out. While the YouTube videos and a few people were saying I just needed to start putting out videos immediately, I knew that the talent we had on our team, even with just Michael and myself, was far better than that. A few weeks later, we introduced the idea to another mutual friend of ours, Rocky Guillory. He was in! We met weekly to brainstorm and figure out what we needed to make this happen at the level that I expected. As time went by, we started to grow our social media little by little. After some detailed planning and one failed attempt, we finally had a promo I was pleased with and launched our YouTube Channel. During the shooting of the promo, is also the time where I realized that my body would reject any pepper being put into my body hotter than a jalapeno!!
One of our brainstorming sessions included talking about sponsors and from my standpoint I had mentioned that I didn’t want any sponsors until we had a few episodes out and we could prove our value enough to show we were worthy of having sponsors. But, without asking, Natural Northern Foods reached out to us offering us their 2 hot sauces and then the Sunburnt Sauce Company did the same and before we knew it, we had sponsors left and right. And these companies weren’t even looking for a spot on our show. They simply wanted to get the hot sauces in our hands to try. I talked it over with Michael and Rocky and we decided to go ahead and take sponsors. We offered them the first spots on our show in return for their products and they, along with several others, agreed. Eventually we would be blown away by the response we would get from our sponsors. Currently, we have enough product for 4 full episodes with a 5th episode in the making. This is also the point where I realized that I wanted to change directions for the show from the crazy, super spicy challenges to focusing on the people behind the products. As we gained more and more sponsors for the shows, I had the opportunity to get to know more about these people and I found out how amazing these people really were. Some of these makers had already made the leap to growing a full fledged company while others were still on that road. Some work 40, 50, 60 hours or more a week at their normal job only to come home and mix, bottle, label, and seal their passion up for others to try on the weekend. Sometimes, the only advertising they have time for is a couple hours at a farm markets every weekend. We’ve met veteran owned companies, those who raise money for charities, people overseas, and those simply working their butts off everyday to achieve their dreams and provide for their families.
As we got closer and closer to shooting our first episode, I thought it would be a great idea to have a host of sorts for our show; to help cut down on our distractions while filming. I had asked a couple former coworker friends if they were interested and this is where Shawn Johnson stepped in. However, we found out that Shawn had a much higher heat tolerance for spicy food than the rest of us, so instead of having him host the show, we made him a part of our crew. I think it’s important to have different spice tolerances to give a better review for different people and their own tolerances. We continued to plan our first episode. Michael landed our food sponsors and we thought we were finally ready to shoot. Unfortunately, it was one week before the original release date of November 19th. We filmed our first episode, I got the footage back to the house, and it was crap. The sound was bad, I realized the b-roll footage wasn’t compatible with my then current video editing software (Magix Vegas Pro 14)...and this wasn’t just about me being a perfectionist. I had to make the decision to postpone the first episode until February 4th, 2020, which seemed like a really long time away, but I knew with the holidays, having to work extra hours with our Photos with Santa gigs, needing to upgrade software and equipment, I knew that the next date I set had to be set in stone. I hated more than anybody to have to do it, but I felt like it was the right thing to do. I didn’t want to just put content out to be putting content out. Our team is better than that. So, I personally called and talked to all of the first episode sponsors to let them know. I’m old school when it comes to some things and felt like a personal apology was necessary. Everyone was slightly disappointed as expected, but they completely understood. In many ways, it was a blessing in disguise. We had a couple sauces where the recipe had changed, one where the label had changed, so we feel like it worked out better for more ways than one.
We have since upgraded a lot of equipment including adding two shotgun mics, a new tripod, a motorized camera slider for smooth, up-close b-roll shots of food and products (though I had to send it back for a new one), added props to our setup (ceramic bowls, soup spoons, etc), rebuilt the entire set to be more sound friendly, upgraded my video editing software, along with a few other additions. We have learned a lot already and expect to learn a lot more, but we will be better for it. They say, “If it doesn’t kill you, it makes you stronger,” but I believe it only makes you stronger if you learn from your mistakes and take action to improve whatever was broken in the first place.
We start filming on the 7th of January and we will be ready. We will also be going LIVE from our Spice of Life Show page just before shooting our episode and would love to have you join us. We will also re-launch a new spice community product lineup video on January 28th and our premiere episode on the 4th of February and we will be ready. We are excited to see what all this brings, especially to the people behind the many spice community products out there. We want to see others succeed doing what they love, and if that happens, we too will be successful in what we are setting out to do...
Feel free to message us with any questions you have, or if you want information about how to get your spice community product reviewed on our show, shoot us a message and we will get back with you soon! Or, if you would like to simply sponsor our show with filming products or financially, or by other means, feel free to reach out so we can connect! We hope everyone has an incredible 2020! Take care & God Bless!
