Twenty-three years ago, Open Door started with a group of energized people in a bar in Forest Park. We came of age in school auditoriums and matured into our own space 12 years ago. Today, we are closing our Door, another casualty of Covid.

THANK YOU to our landlord, investors and donors; to the many who served tirelessly on our board; to our actors, directors, stage managers, design and technical artists and our videographers; to our musicians, vocalists, and comedians; and to our many volunteers.

Take a moment to look over all the art on this page. This is what you made happen. And to our many thousands of patrons who laughed, cried and applauded, thank you for 23 years. Nothing on this page would have been possible without each of you, all of you.

TOGETHER we brought MAGIC to our communities.

"Local media creates place. It creates a sense of space, too. While reporting on a community, it creates community for people who may not even realize what’s happening in other areas.”

"Small businesses appreciate your support. Small businesses are the cornerstones of a community; they're the ones that grow up with you and your family."

For the past 77 years anyone dining at Connie's Family Restaurant in Berwyn would know they were part of a busy, bustling enterprise. What they might not know is that they and their fellow diners are only a part of what happens at Connie's.

"...there's a certain sort of public service aspect to community journalism where we write about government operations that I think are essential for people to know about, for us to document, for the record to be made of those kinds of decisions..."

Wishing you a wonderful new year! Thank you to everyone who supported Open Door throughout 2021 and helped keep the arts thriving in, what was, another difficult year for many. Your support means the world to us.

We appreciate each and everyone of you - our supporters, fellow theaters, the artists who share their talent and stories with us - and everyone in between. We are beyond grateful to be a part of such an amazing community!

Our first (and second) Backstory Project is an interview with Dan Haley, editor of the Wednesday Journal Oak Park River Forest and publisher of Growing Community Media. Watch the video here >> https://www.opendoortheater.net/backstory-project

The interview was such a riveting, thought-provoking piece that is we made it a two-part series.

>> Part 1 is Dan's story - how/why he went into journalism and why he chose to found a local newspaper. And, it's the history of the Wednesday Journal and of Wednesday Journal Inc. What makes it so relevant is it's also the story of any community newspaper - the struggles, the successes - what works, what doesn't. In telling the WJ story, he also shares much of Oak Park's story.

>> Part 2 - focuses on the place of community journalism today - is it relevant, equitable in its coverage? How should it change to be equitable and relevant? How does a newspaper organization support itself given social media's overwhelming presence? Why the change from a for-profit business to a non-profit organization?
