This past week has been really difficult, whether you’re directly affected by the violence and injustice happening in Minnesota and elsewhere around the world, or seeing it incessantly in news headlines and social media posts, or hearing first hand updates from friends and loved ones who are affected. It’s a lot to take in, and it’s scary and heartbreaking. Many people are struggling and it’s weighing heavily on my heart.
I also believe that in dark times it becomes even more important to notice the beauty in the world. It’s essential to our humanity. So I have this little image of a tree under a soft, colorful aurora, and I think it's pretty, and I thought I would share it with you. I hope it makes you feel something good, for a moment.
It reminds me of a night filled with joy and awe. On this night, May 10, 2024, I loaded up my car with my 9-year-old, my friend, and her 13-year-old, and we drove three hours to Brigham County Park in Wisconsin. We saw the most incredible aurora display that night. It was the first time for both kids, which was really special. We brought beach chairs and snacks and blankets, and I let my 9-year-old use my cell phone to take photos. He kept running over to show me his captures, or to point out a fresh burst of color and light in the sky. It’s one of the best parts of parenting, to share something you love with your child and to have them love it back.
Moments like that are what I am holding on to right now.
May you find your light in the dark.
