"TELL ME WHY "— SOLD AT AUCTION

A piece from my studio has found a new home through the Museum of Northwest Art's 2026 Sapphire Dream Annual Art Auction in La Conner, Washington.

"Tell Me Why" — mixed media collage on board, 24 × 22.5″, 2025 — was juried into the auction by Jessica Wilks, Director of Curatorial Affairs at the Tacoma Art Museum, and sold during the May 2026 event. The title is drawn from the 1964 Beatles song.

The Museum of Northwest Art at 121 South First Street in La Conner is one of the Pacific Northwest's premier art institutions and a longtime supporter of regional artists. Proceeds were donated to the museum.

"MODERN MYTH MAKING" — GJ GILLESPIE SOLO SHOW INSTALLED
58 mixed-media collages across nine storefront windows in downtown Burien, Washington — four hours of hanging, three series, a decade of work on the walls.

The show is part of the City of Burien Gallery Program at Merrill Gardens, 15214 2nd Ave SW, and runs through September 24, 2026.

Three series — Ancient Echoes, Midcentury Rifts, and Mystic Landscapes — span Greek and Roman mythology, mid-century abstraction, and the fog-bound landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. Titles throughout are drawn from rock and pop music.

Each window has a QR code placard linking to full artwork titles and details. The windows are best seen from the sidewalk in person, and especially at night when the lighting brings everything to life.

More photos coming soon.

"Stone Free" in ASSIGNMENT LITERARY MAGAZINE — SUMMER 2026

The editors of Assignment Literary Magazine have chosen "Stone Free" by GJ Gillespie for publication in their Summer 2026 issue.

ABOUT
Stone Free Mixed media collage on paper 24 × 17 inches 2026

Built from found papers, tissue, cheesecloth, and pencil, with watercolor and acrylic medium, this figure is based on a Renaissance sketch — a classical form dissolved into layered contemporary materials. The title references Jimi Hendrix's 1967 debut single, in which the narrator breaks free from the ties that bind him.

ACCEPTED — Issue 51

"Do the Loco Motion" accepted for publication in 3Elements Review, an independent literary journal that challenges writers and artists to incorporate three specific prompt words into every submission. This issue's elements: Hatch · Standoff · Step-Ball-Change.

My element: Step-Ball-Change — the foundational three-beat sequence of jazz and tap dance. Three figures built from torn newspaper crossword puzzles, each caught in a different beat of the step-ball-change, moving across a deep cobalt field of spray paint and splattered hot wax.

The figures are made entirely of language — crossword clues, grids, intersecting words — submitted to a journal made of language.

Title after the 1962 pop classic by Little Eva.

This is my 213th GJ Gillespie publication.

THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME
*Mixed media collage on canvas*
49.5 × 37.5 × 1"
2026

What if light itself is made of bits — and the landscape behind reality runs on code? This piece continues my exploration of digital information merging with the natural world, a Northwest mystical landscape rendered in the visual language of technology.

Hundreds of tiny squares of Japanese papers, found papers, tissue, crossword puzzles, tin foil, acrylic, and oil paint build a field where nature and data are indistinguishable.

Title after a 1968 psychedelic anthem by Max Frost and the Troopers.

Will be featured alongside 20 other works in my upcoming solo show with the City of Burien, WA at Merrill Gardens, June through September 2026.

MY 112th JOURNAL PUBLICATION.
Honored to share that my piece, "What Achilles Left Behind", has been accepted for publication in the 2026 issue of "The Listening Eye".

**The Story Behind the Art:**
This piece is inspired by a Roman fresco from the ruins of Pompeii depicting the *Judgment of Arms*. Following the death of Achilles, a bitter dispute arose between Ajax and Odysseus over who would inherit his god-forged shield. While the two heroes anchor the conflict, my composition captures the full chaos of the scene—including the essential third figure acting as a mediator or witness to the rivalry, trying to hold back the brewing violence.

**The Process:**
To capture the weathered, crumbling texture of an ancient fresco unearthed from the ashes, I built this composition using layered found papers, tissue, pencil, pen, cheese cloth and acrylic paint on paper. I then rubbed actual river clay into the surface to age the art and give it an authentic, earthy patina.

**About the Journal:**
*The Listening Eye* is a venerable creative arts journal that has been showcasing poetry, short fiction, and artwork through Kent State University’s Geauga Campus since 1970. Founded by English Professor Emerita Grace Butcher—who edited the journal for an incredible 52 years—its first half-century of print history is permanently archived in the Kent State Library’s Special Collections. Today, TLE continues its legacy in a vibrant, exclusively digital format.

Look out for the 2026 issue arriving this September.

JUST OPENED A LEDA ART SUPPLY LOVE LETTER. 💛
Amanda is a high school senior and aspiring illustrator who wrote to us on bright orange paper — handwritten, heartfelt, decorated with blue stars.
She found Leda sketchbooks in 2022 and said she had NEVER enjoyed a sketchbook as much. During a tough junior year, sketching in her Leda brought her the most peace.

Her words: "Your products truly uplift artists, bring out creativity and at least have helped me pursue my passion and art business."

Congratulations on your graduation Amanda. This letter means everything to our team here at Leda Art Supply!

Fulfilling our mission to help artists make the world a more beautiful place.
