Our “The Men Behind MVAAFF” spotlight series concludes with our co-founder, Floyd A.B. Rance III.

Based in Colorado, Floyd is the Co-Founder of the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival and Owner & CEO of Run&Shoot Filmworks, Inc. He has been part of MVAAFF for 24 years, helping build it into one of the most influential celebrations of Black film and culture in the world.

His advice to young men entering film and media:
“It’s not how you start — it’s how you finish. Finish strong!”

One of his favorite MVAAFF memories comes from the filmmaker boat rides. While exhausting at times, they were always fun. He also treasures watching the festival grow from an idea into the thriving community it is today.

Thank you, Floyd, for your vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to Black storytelling. 🎬✨

Our “The Men Behind MVAAFF” spotlight series continues with John Quackenbush, Lead Projectionist.

Based in Massachusetts, John has been part of the MVAAFF team for several years. In addition to serving as Lead Projectionist for the festival, he works as a Projectionist for Harvard University’s Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies.

His advice to young men entering film and media:
Stay curious, work hard, and be someone people can rely on. Learn as much as you can and say yes to new challenges.

One of his favorite MVAAFF memories comes from his very first year at the festival. He was blown away by the staff, the location, and the caliber of the films. From day one, it was clear that MVAAFF was something special—and it’s a feeling that keeps him coming back year after year. 🎬✨
