This Saturday, our panel of judges will be evaluating entries for the 6th Annual "Chalk It Up to Art!" Chalk Contest. From 8:00 AM to Noon on Saturday, October 17th, East 1st Street and South Vine Street will be transformed into a giant, open-air storybook alongside the final Vine Street Market at O'Fallon Station of the season.
As artists compete for cash prizes across the Child, Adult, and Family divisions, our judges will be tracking scores based on this year’s official theme: “From the Page to the Streets”.
Here is what the judges will be looking for as they score each square:

Narrative Translation & Storytelling

Judges want to see how successfully the artwork captures the core spirit, mood, or exact character essence of the book, poem, comic book, or graphic novel it is adapting. The most successful pieces will allow passing market-goers to immediately recognize the written source material being brought to life.

Creative Adaptation & Originality

While reproducing a famous book cover is impressive, judges are hunting for unique voice and original perspectives. They will highly reward artists who invent their own custom scenes inspired by the text or who cleverly integrate literary elements like floating text, typography, quotes, or open-book imagery directly into the pavement design.

Technical Ex*****on & Chalk Mastery

The judges will look closely at how well artists manipulate raw chalk on the rough downtown pavement. They are looking for technical precision, which includes crisp blending, smooth gradients, clean outlines, intentional color layering, and sharp contrasts between light and shadow.

Dimensional Impact & Spatial Balance

A great contest entry must make excellent use of its pre-marked street square, maintaining proper proportions, scale, and balance between the main subject and the surrounding negative space. Extra consideration will be given to designs that break the boundaries of a flat image—such as pieces utilizing 3D anamorphic depth or dramatic perspectives that make the story look like it is bursting out of the asphalt.
Artists should remember to have their final touches completed by 11:45 AM, as the official judges' tally will conclude just before the final cash prize winners and the People's Choice award are announced at Noon at Art Gecko Creative Studio.
