Rockland Poets Dedicated to poetry in Orange, Rockland, and Bergen counties... and beyond! What is a poetry slam? Strong writing and strong delivery are both important.

Rockland Poets hosts poetry slams, workshops, open mics, and other poetry events in Rockland County NY, in New York's Lower Hudson Valley. We are dedicated to providing an outlet for people to create, share, and listen to poetry. We currently have an in-person poetry slam on the first Saturday of each month, and have been hosting online workshops on Sunday, Thursday and Friday, in addition to onli

ne Open Mics over Zoom. A poetry slam is a performance poetry competition judged by the audience. Where traditional poetry readings are about supporting the poet, poetry slams focus on the interaction between audience and poet. Whether you want to come out and participate by performing or by spectating, you are welcome. We've been putting on events since March 2011.

Oh what a night. Here are our June’s Partner Slam winners, and one of our Rockland H.S. Poet winners: Partner Slam 3rd place winners are Team Plants, 2nd place The Bird, and 1st place the Sheps. 👏🏽 H.S. Poet 2nd place winner, Melody. Bryan kneeling giving out all of the cash. The awesome Round Table Brewery providing the space and love. All of the people that came out to compete, for the love of poetry, and support. It is not easy putting yourself out there on the mic. We have a super special poetry slam this Saturday, June 6th.

We’ll be announcing this year’s Rockland Poets High School Poetry Prize winners + one of them will be reading a couple of poems (the other can’t make it; will be coming to our next open mic instead), THEN we’ll be having our partner slam, in which pairs of poets will co-perform poems they’ve co-written. We will also have a very very short open mic.

Open mic sign-ups open 6:30 PM; event proper starts at ~7:02 pm. Round Table Brewery in the GARNER Arts Center in Garnerville.

Saturday, June 20 we’ll be having our poetry open mic at Burger Loft in Nyack. I don’t think we have a featured poet this month? BUT ! For July open mic, we’ll have Patrick Roche, which I am super duper excited about.

With both the open mic and the slam, admission is $10 general, $5 students / seniors / anyone who can’t swing $5 right now.

Circle Up this week is taking a little excursion -- the Tuxedo Parks & Rec department is holding a reading and workshop by NYC poets Leah V and Patrick Roche on Thurs May 28, 630-830pm at the Tuxedo Town Hall at 1 Temple Dr, Tuxedo NY.

Leah V is a New York City based performance poet, producer, curator, officiant, and performance coach known for her emotionally layered storytelling and immersive live productions blending poetry, music, movement, and multimedia. A Bronx-raised artist holding a Bachelor’s degree in English & Professional Writing, she is the founder and host of Mictastic NYC and has curated and featured in numerous sold-out productions at the acclaimed Off-Broadway Triad Theater. Her original one-woman production The Long Way Home has been praised for its powerful fusion of spoken word, theater, and storytelling. Leah has performed at the legendary Apollo Theater with Poetry Me, Please and at institutions including University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, DePauw University, Lehman College, and Baruch College. She also serves as Poetry Administrator for The RISE Journey, curating DEI-centered poetry and storytelling programming for corporate and educational audiences nationwide.

Patrick Roche is a q***r poet, mental health advocate, and Carly Rae Jepsen enthusiast. He is the author of A Socially Acceptable Breakdown (Button Poetry, 2021), which was named a Finalist for the Hoffer Award. Videos of his work have amassed over 9 million views on YouTube, and his work has been published by or appeared on UpWorthy, Buzzfeed, The Huffington Post, Muzzle Magazine, Thimble Literary Magazine, and his mom’s fridge. Patrick has shared stages with Darryl "DMC" McDaniels of RUN DMC, Pitch Perfect star Brittany Snow, and Abbott Elementary star Tyler James Williams. He currently lives with his husband and their dog in Astoria, NY.
