Something Hopperesque is happening in Nyack this June. 📸✨

Join us for a month of celebrations blending contemporary creative expression with Hopper’s inspiration. Bridge the past and future at the birthplace of America’s iconic realist painter and beloved cultural landmark.

Presented in honor of the Museum's 55th Anniversary, transforms downtown Nyack into a walkable art experience from June 4 through July 5.

The thematic centerpiece of the anniversary is a curated exhibition featuring 55 Hopper-inspired photographs by artists from around the world installed in storefronts and community spaces throughout downtown Nyack. Juried by distinguished artist Richard Tuschman, the selected images capture the light, mood, atmosphere, and quiet moments synonymous with Hopper’s work.

The exhibition grows out of our long-running weekly Instagram series and also draws inspiration from the original 2011 and 2012 Hopper Happens festivals conceived by artist Kristina Burns.

June events include:
✨ Preview Art Walk & Director Tour: Juried Photo Show — June 11
🍽 Hopper’s Way Solstice Dinner — June 21
🎶 Music in the Garden: “Night Hawk” in Concert — June 27
🎨 Hopper Mural Youth & Community Workshops — June 14, 20 & 27
🚶 Walking tour and digital exhibition map through Bloomberg Connects

The final weekend of the exhibition also aligns with Upstate Art Weekend (June 25–28), welcoming visitors from across the region to explore art throughout the Hudson Valley.

Long before Nighthawks, Edward Hopper was just a boy growing up in Nyack. He would ride his bike through town, swim in the summer, row on Rockland Lake, and sketch in his journal as he wandered the streets.⁣

He sailed the Hudson with friends and built a catboat at 15, though it didn't exactly fare too well. He even hauled lumber up to the attic and built a canoe. He was a regular kid, by most accounts. ⁣

But he was always observing - noticing the angle of afternoon light on the side of a house, the stillness of a street, the light on the water, and the boats in the shipyard.⁣

Nyack gave him all of it. The river, the architecture and the light. In a lot of ways, Hopper never really left. You can see it in his work. ⁣

Artist, writer, and naturalist James Prosek has spent his career exploring the relationship between art, nature, and conservation. ⁣

Known internationally for his intricate paintings, books, and environmental advocacy, Prosek brings the same depth of observation to this new body of work centered on trees, growth, and history.⁣

Our current exhibition, James Prosek: Memory, Trees & Shadows invites viewers to look closely at the natural world and consider what it reveals about memory, time, and place. Through drawing, mark-making, and storytelling, Prosek reminds us that nature is never separate from human history.⁣

This week's image in our Hopper Happens photography series is by .artphoto on Instagram, whose photo taken in Poland captures the essence of Edward Hopper's 1927 Automat.⁣

Of this photo, she asks, "Waiting, or Longing? ⁣

It's the age-old question Hopper's subjects invite: are they lonely, or just alone? Hopper himself simply said, "It's what the viewer thinks."⁣

Next Wednesday, we launch the Juried Photography Exhibition, honoring our long-standing Instagram photo series and the 2011/2012 Hopper Happens festival created by Kris Burns.⁣

55 Hopperesque images by 55 photographers from around the globe will be displayed throughout Hopper's hometown. Stay tuned for details and more events!⁣

The wisteria may have finished blooming for the season, but the work behind the scenes is still ongoing. 🌿

Right now the vines are in full summer growth mode, sending out new shoots and twisting in every direction. Regular pruning and care are essential to help protect the structure, guide healthy growth, and encourage next spring’s blooms.

It’s a reminder that gardens, like historic places, require care and stewardship in every season too!

Thank you to everyone supporting the care of the Edward Hopper House Museum grounds through our Wisteria Campaign.

If you’d like to help support this ongoing work, please consider making a donation. Every contribution, in any amount, is greatly appreciated. 💜
