31 Days of Spooky Stuff - Devil’s Night Bonus Post

Last night we wrapped up a month of Halloween themed figure sketch sessions at Hazel Perk, and we had a blast!

Thanks to everyone that joined in the fun over the course of the month and extra special thanks to the models! Don’t feel bad if you missed out… We’re working on a special Christmas themed session TBA!

31 Days of Spooky Stuff - Day 30

"Gorgeous" another illustration that I've wanted to do for a long time. Janet and I watched “House” again recently and she asked me if it’s considered a cult movie. I said that it’s probably the cultiest cult movie that ever culted.

If you’re not familiar with House, it should be added to your Halloween horror movie nights, but also one of the many documentaries on the film. The history of House is very interesting.

31 Days of Spooky Stuff - Day 29

“The ‘Good’ Witch” from last year. I was shooting for enticing and cute at the same time. Really happy with the pumpkin face and Sally’s legs. Since I used a live model as the base for this piece, her body contours are a lot more “real” than usual. I prefer to draw her with angular joints, but this worked out nicely.

31 Days of Spooky Stuff - Day 28

It’s the Halloween home stretch!

Most artists can relate to the need to create something just so you can get it off your mind. You know it won’t be your finest work, but it must be dealt with so you can move on. I’ve been wanting to do a piece based on the Phantom of The Paradise for years and it was a perfect fit for Hallow Art 12. And now I can get on with the next esoteric art project in my head.

Phantom of The Paradise is a fairly obscure film, but the reference I used for the “pose” is an even deeper cut. If you get it, you’re probably doing the laugh right now.

31 Days of Spooky Stuff - Day 27

The Tree of Doom is a little late this year, but there's no keeping a silly tradition down.

People that walk by always want to know what goes into making these things. Maybe I should do a one-day seminar at the local learning annex or something. “Okay everyone, hold the foam core against your chest, now get out your X-Acto knives and make sure you cut towards your face.”

31 Days of Spooky Stuff - Day 26

Back in 2008 (I think), Nightmare Sinema changed it’s name to Chiller Drive-In because reasons. I rushed like I’d never rushed before to whip up an animated intro for the renamed show. I chose a Shag-esque style for the characters because it was quick and easy. There are some other design styles in the rest of the intro, but I kept everything simple just to get the job done.

Here are the intro "tombstones". These characters appeared in two or more episodes or had a decent role in one.

Some might say that the show had too many characters, and they’re right. It was a horror host program, not Deep Space Nine.

31 Days of Spooky Stuff - Day 25

Going back to 2020 for "That House Has Full Size Candy Bars".

Sometimes an idea is better in my head than it is in reality (something all creatives can relate to). I wanted a wholesome moment between these two characters, but I rushed it and it’s missing design elements that were in the sketches.

Still haven't decided on how Sally and Molly relate to each other. There are some great theories, but nothing canon.

31 Days of Spooky Stuff - Day 24

A rushed Sinister piece from 2012. Tonya worked the crowd and freaked a lot of people back to their cars before they even set foot in the haunt. I imagine that I’d be pretty proud if I did that to someone.

One of the things that I loved about Sinister was the balance between vaudevillian dark comedy and hellish nightmare fuel.

Some haunt actors (not all of them) just do simple scares, and that get real old real fast. It is nice to see new haunts taking a cue from Sinister (whether they’ll admit it or not) and tickle your funny bone before they make you eat it.

Not the first time I’ve done a portrait of Vincent Price, so I stepped it up a bit. Really happy with this.

31 Days of Spooky Stuff - Day 21

Before I started on this one, I had to decide on which Christopher Lee look to go with. So many to iconic roles to choose from: Scaramanga, Frankenstein’s monster, Sarumon, Count Dooku, Fu Manchu. Okay, maybe not that last one.

I think it's pretty safe to say that Dracula beats them all combined.

31 Days of Spooky Stuff - Day 20

The first of three new portraits for 2024. While the classic Universal horror films are certainly outstanding and deserve all the praise they get, they’ve been drawn to death. For me, Hammer horror is where it’s at.

So I started with Peter Cushing. He was a tough one. The trouble with this technique (at least the way I do it) is that the picture doesn’t come together until the last pieces are drawn. I have another finished portrait of Cushing, but it’s no quite right. But I'm pretty happy with this one.

31 Days of Spooky Stuff - Day 19

"The Homecoming Queen’s Got a Gun" might not be spooky, but it's gotta be a little scary, huh?

Fans of 1980s novelty songs will get the reference, and this is an homage to the tune. That’s it. I had no intention of being political or incendiary. However, I certainly understand how it could be interpreted that way. I suppose that in a way this could be the darkest piece of art I’ve ever done.

Just for S&Gs I had an AI critique it. It liked my technique, but evaded the subject matter. Probably reported me to the FBI.
