Chestnut Street Playhouse

Chestnut Street Playhouse Located at 24 Chestnut Street, Central Fire Headquarters became the hub of the Norwich Fire Department. The Playhouse will revive the community of Norwich.

This beautiful Queen Anne style building housed multiple fire companies. In 2000, this building was transformed into a 67-seat black box theater. Now, in the heart of downtown Norwich, CT, the Chestnut Street Playhouse is the place to be for entertainment, education and a celebration of the performing arts. This firehouse has always been an integral part of the Norwich community. We continue this

tradition by providing quality entertainment at affordable costs to as broad an audience as possible. Chestnut Street Playhouse is committed to providing high quality theatrical experiences that entertain audiences, educate students, and nurture and develop the local arts community. We strive to be a major catalyst for community involvement and revitalization through the arts. We are making efforts to give local artists a voice and to bring in new audiences with diverse programming: classes for young people, thought-provoking productions and laughter-filled special events will help us accomplish this.

Happy Friday! We’re sharing this image and caption from our friend .thoma.writer (whose work has been featured in two of our last five Playwrights Festivals). She says:

Playwrights day off. What a beautiful day for paddling. In a world where there is less and less support for writers, I am grateful for organizations that make it a part of their mission to support local artists.

You still have time to submit to Chestnut Street Playhouse’s Annual Playwrights Festival.

🩸CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
OVERALL NOTE- With the exception of the 3 adult actors, our cast consists of high school seniors living through the intense final weeks leading up to Prom and graduation. Notwithstanding that these kids are highly iconic figures in the adolescent landscape, they should also be very much individuals. THE SCRIPT CALLS FOR 10 STUDENTS, BUT MAY ADD MORE TO GIVE THE ENSEMBLE A ROUNDER FEEL.

CARRIE WHITE: ANY RACE 18+(Mezzo-Soprano E5-A3) A painfully shy outsider who, in spite of her best efforts to belong, has been the victim of her classmates' cruel jokes since childhood, as well as her mother's strict, biblically-ordained control at home. She transforms from ugly duckling into graceful - then vengeful - swan. Vocally capable of lyrical sweetness to fierce power.
MARGARET WHITE: ANY RACE 30-50 (Soprano E5-C4) A woman of visceral extremes, she balances her fervent religious convictions with equally sincere true-believer spirituality and tender, maternal love for Carrie. Like Carrie, with whom she shares several duets, her voice must range from expressive and melodic to ferocious and frightening.
SUE SNELL: ANY RACE 18+ (Mezzo-Soprano E5-A3) A straight-A student who's been popular her whole life, she's level headed for her age. Her unthinking participation in a cruel act of bullying causes a crisis of conscience that leads her on a journey to right things. Vocally - pop ballad.
TOMMY ROSS: ANY RACE 18+(Tenor C5-B2 ) Popular star athlete, valedictorian, and all round stand-out, he's the boy that all the girls want to be with, and all the boys want to be. Yet he also has an unexpected, quirky sensitivity and is just starting to mine his personal life and feelings- a budding poet. Vocally - effortless pop quality.
CHRIS HARGENSEN: ANY RACE 18+ (Mezzo-Soprano E5-A3) Rich, spoiled-rotten and wickedly funny, Chris is a popular beauty whose arrogant self-assurance makes her believe that the rules don't apply to her. Loaded with sexual dynomite, she has serious daddy and anger-management issues. Vocally Pop Rock
BILLY NOLAN: ANY RACE 18+ (Baritone C5-B2) Now in his sixth year of high school, Billy is a sexy, stupid-like-a-fox bad boy whose wise mouth troublemaking has led him to spend more time in detention than in class. All these qualities make it easy for his girlfriend Chris to manipulate him to do her bidding. Vocally- wailing rocker.
MISS GARDNER: ANY RACE 30-50 (Alto B4-A3) Girls' PE teacher who can be a strict disciplinarian if necessary, but when Carrie rouses her maternal instinct, she surprises herself by revealing a protective "fairy-godmother" side. Vocally - belt rock warm and strong.
MR. STEPHENS: ANY RACE 30-50 (Baritone E4-G2) This well intentioned English teacher and guidance counselor struggles to help his students realize their potential. A dedicated educator, he's stretched thin in his duties, woefully underpaid and a bit overwhelmed as to how to handle the Billy Nolan's of the classroom combat zone. Vocally - rock legit
NORMA: ANY RACE 18+ (Mezzo-Soprano E5-A3) BItchy gossipy and a shameless suck-up to authority, Norma is second in command to Chris' queen bee.
FREIDA: ANY RACE 18+ (Mezzo-Soprano E5-A3) Sue's brainy pal, she's an easy going, get along follower and a tireless extracurricular committee volunteer.
HELEN: ANY RACE 18+ (Mezzo-Soprano E5-A3) Giggly and easily shocked, her immaturity and need to belong make her the perfect example of the herd mentality.
GEORGE: ANY RACE 18+ (Tenor C5-B2) Tommy's jock wingman since childhood, George idolizes him. Perhaps a little too much........?
STOKES: ANY RACE 18+ (Tenor C5-B2) A bit of a nerd, he's happy to be included as one of Tommy's posse.
FREDDY: ANY RACE 18+ (Tenor C5-B2) Wise-cracking class clown and official yearbook photographer, he can't believe any girl would ever give him the time of day.

ALL ARE WELCOME 🩸🩸🩸
