We are the only aquarium devoted to Long Island Sound, the “Estuary of National Significance” just outside our doors. As an arm of the Atlantic Ocean, the Sound is an environmen

t rich in aquatic life … even within sight of heavily urbanized New York City. The marine population we exhibit includes varieties of sharks, big and small, stingrays, harbor seals, sea turtles, game fish, jellies, crabs, lobsters, mollusks and more. We also exhibit tropical travelers that follow the Gulf Stream north to our waters. Plus we have some other fun animals, from tamarins to meerkats. We offer lots of touch experiences including stingrays, sharks, jellyfish and intertidal animals.

We’re welcoming dwarf shield-tailed agama, Hercules, to the Aquarium! This incredible species is known for their flat, spiky tail, which gives them their name and is used as a defense mechanism to plug the entrance to their burrows.

Short bigeye fish live in rocky ecosystems and reefs, up to 600 feet deep. Their coloration makes them nearly invisible in the deep, dark ocean, which helps them avoid predators.

We asked some of our guests to guess what they think an Atlantic puffin call sounds like! Here were their best attempts 😆

Atlantic puffins use various calls to communicate with others in their colony. One of the more common calls you can hear, sounds like a cross between a cow moo, a creaking door, and a revving chainsaw.

Last month, our Conservation Team partnered with Harbor Watch and Connecticut Department of Transportation to remove wrack (dead plant material) from a local salt marsh in an effort to research if removing this organic material will help promote the growth of native salt marsh grasses.

While small amounts of wrack can be beneficial for salt marsh health, marshes are becoming increasingly dominated by an invasive wetland grass, called common reed, that is much larger than native grasses. The resulting build-up from excess plant material could cause significant problems for salt marshes, such as blocking sunlight from reaching the soil, which prevents native plants from growing at all.

More than a truckload of wrack, trash, and large debris was removed from this marsh! 👏
