If you ever find yourselves in Lincoln Washington be sure at look up my friend Mark and ask him to see my mural I just did for him. It was an incredible week of hard core painting! This mural is one of my best to date. The concept was Mark's and I created the design off of his wishes. He wanted to see an underwater scene with Rainbow Trout, walleye, and loons, plus some mountain sheep and the landscape around the lake where he lives.

I spent some time designing and getting the wall prepped and then painted the entire week. He made me all my meals and we even took an evening boat ride which was incredibly inspiring.

Big Sheep Creek near Northport swells in the spring to a point we call highwater. The beavers live in this area and every year they make quite a mess with their house building skills. But the creek also has a way of fighting back. Every spring high water from snow melt comes and washes away the dams much to the chagrin of the beavers, I am sure!

Three paintings from "Beneath the Open Sky" show. These pieces were inspired by the low water along the Columbia River and Lake Roosevelt. Every spring the water is kept very low so work can be done on the Grand Coulee Damn. When the water is low you can see all sorts of interesting striations of the shoreline, rocks that are normally underwater and how the landscape might have looked nearly 100 years ago before the damn went in. I love water and rocks and imagining the past!

Mid-April I was asked if I could be ready for a last-minute show at the Chase Gallery in June. I had been plein air painting every day for just under a month and had 23 pieces that were near complete. I decided right then and there to put the brakes on painting out and I settled into weeks of "finishing" the art. Some required 5 percent more, some 10, some 15 and some were just great the way they were. They had to be finished before I went to the PACE convention, so they had time to dry. When I got home, I documented, varnished, framed and wired up the art before delivering them to the gallery. It was a lot to accomplish but now I have my first body of work that I am very proud of. What a feeling it was seeing all of them hung so beautifully in that big white gallery!

A constant source of inspiration, the mighty Columbia River and the valley. I often spend time walking along the shoreline and admiring the beauty of this area. It brings me joy to paint the ever-changing waters and skies while the land remains the same.

The mighty Columbia River weaves its way through Northport before turning into Lake Roosevelt further down river. It sparkles along the shoreline and roars as it speeds by. Wild birds fly overhead and fish jump on this picturesque river. I am continually inspired to paint it.

These three plein air paintings and 20 others of mine are on display at the Chase Gallery in Spokane. The two person show, with fellow artist Abby Joy, "Beneath the Open Sky" is up through June 26th.

Spring is the season for Service Berry or otherwise known as Saskatoon Berry and the Yarrow Balsamroot. I love the combination of the bright white and sunny yellow against the deep blues and greens of spring. These blossoms only last a few weeks but what a glorious time it is!

This was my first Plein Air of 2026. I hit the road running after a long winter of working in the studio. The first time out is always exhilarating. This scene is of Silver Crown Mountain, a large memorable landmark that looms over town in Northport Wa.
