Sangria Summer delivered a commanding performance in the Courageous Lady, going straight to the front, setting strong fractions over a track labeled good of 26:4, 54:4, 1:22:1 and continuing on to an almost three-length victory in 1:51:1

The impressive filly gave driver Matt Kakaley his second win in the Courageous Lady, making the victory even more special.

She had rattled off four consecutive wins including the Grade 3 Shady Daisy at the Meadowlands and the Grade 1 James Lynch Memorial at Pocono before finishing 4th in the Pennsylvania Sires Stakes Final where she never had racing room.

With a good post to her advantage, Kakaley was going to make sure the race went through his talented filly and daughter of Captaintreacherous.

“She won the post draw, with Loua Dipa drawing post 8 we took advantage of it. She zipped around there, she drives like a car so it makes my job easy,” Kakaley said after the race.

Kakaley was equally confident about what lies ahead for the talented filly.

“She’s a special filly so I’m sure you’ll be hearing from her again,” he added.

We will hear from her immediately as it is on to Scioto Downs for the Breeders Crown next weekend.

Perfect Thought (Anthony Macdonald) and Seaside Shuffle (Chris Page) completed the exotics behind Sangria Summer. Be Perfect BG went off the slight favorite and made a mild rally from the back but had to settle for 4th with Justin Irvine picking up the drive for Dexter Dunn who was unable to make it back from Lexington.

A powerhouse group of pacing mares are set to square off in this year’s Courageous Lady at Northfield Park. Stakes credentials can be found up and down the entire field.
The nine-mare lineup includes a Breeders’ Crown and Jugette winner, two-time Ohio Sires Stakes champion, a New York Sires Stakes champion, a James Lynch Memorial winner and a New Jersey Classic winner, making for one of the deepest editions of the Courageous Lady in its history.
Leading the way is millionaire Loua Dipa who really needs no introduction. She is a Breeders Crown champion, Jugette winner and a Fan Hanover winner. It could take another special performance from this superstar as she draws post eight with Ronnie Wrenn Jr., listed at 4-1.
Loua Dipa will also renew her rivalry with Be Perfect BG, with the two accomplished mares set to meet once again. The pair have already finished heads apart twice this season including a spectacular stretch battle in the Fan Hanover. These two titans of the sport will throw down once again with Be Perfect BG having a slight post edge leaving from post six with Dexter Dunn and listed at 7-2.
The morning line favorite belongs to Sangria Summer at 3-1 with Matt Kakaley driving from post two. She also comes in with an impressive resume including wins in the James Lynch Memorial and Shady Daisy.
Also in the field is 2 times Ohio Sires Stakes champion Seaside Shuffle starting from the second tier with Chris Page at 10-1. Another Sires Stakes winner comes in from New York in the way of Savage Cindy from post 4 with Dan Noble and is listed at 9-2.
The race also features a special local connection in Perfect Thought, who is stabled at Northfield Park. She’ll have the home-track advantage with Anthony MacDonald aboard from post three at 12-1.
Rounding out the field are Prtynproud Hanover, with 3-time winner of this race Dave Palone, at 6-1; Vanna By The River, with Aaron Merriman, at 15-1; and Rodeo Dancer, with Brett Miller, at 20-1.
From the top of the morning line to the longest shot on the board, there are stakes credentials throughout the field. With multiple major stakes winners, champions from several state-bred programs, a local contender, and the latest chapter in the Loua Dipa–Be Perfect BG rivalry, the Courageous Lady has all the ingredients to be one for the ages.

Sunday night (Oct. 4th) Northfield Park plays host to the $100,000 Ohio Sires Stakes Finals for 4-year-olds and up, across all four divisions.

Adding even more excitement to an already loaded 15-race program, races 9 through 12 will make up an all-stakes $10,000-guaranteed Pick 4 pool.

The action gets rolling in Race 9 with the 4-year-old-and-up trotting mares, where a familiar rivalry will take center stage.
Legacy Affair (Post 6) and Jurassic Hattie (Post 5) meet again after their memorable showdown in the Tom Aldrich Memorial Trot back in August. Legacy Affair crossed the wire first that night but was subsequently placed second behind Jurassic Hattie following a pylon violation. Now, the two rivals get another opportunity to settle the score. Standing in their way is a formidable pair, including millionaire Sugar Instead, the 2023 and 2024 Ohio Sires Stakes champion, along with Abbey D (Post 3), who enters as the 8-5 morning-line favorite.

The spotlight then shifts to the pacing mares, where Odds on Chesapeake (Post 5) headlines the field. The 2026 Buckeye Distaff winner has established herself among Ohio's top pacing mares and will carry the distinction of being the 2-1 morning-line favorite into Sunday night's showdown.

Then it’s time to turn to the boys.
The trotting division is led by Hung Over (Post 5), who enters Sunday night as the 6-5 morning-line favorite following his victory in the 2026 Aged Ohio Breeders Championship at the Delaware County Fairgrounds. With a major championship already on his résumé this season, Hung Over will look to add another prestigious Ohio title to his record when the gate springs.

The final division could provide the most star power of the night.
The heavyweight pacing field features several familiar names, including Clever Cody (Post 2), the 2023 and 2024 Ohio Sires Stakes champion. Clever Cody comes into the veteran final with plenty of momentum after recently capturing the Myron Charna Presidents Pace right here at Northfield Park, defeating none other than Charlie May (Post 3). Charlie May is no stranger to championship success himself. The $2.5 million-plus earner is already a two-time aged Ohio Sires Stakes champion, making his presence in this field a major storyline. However, the morning-line nod belongs to another talented pacer. Paris's Dragon, winner of the 2025 Myron Charna, drew the rail and has been installed as the 2-1 morning-line favorite. With Paris's Dragon on the inside, Clever Cody looking to defend his Charna win, and Charlie May looking to reclaim the spotlight, the heavyweight pacing finale has all the ingredients of a memorable finish to the all-stakes Pick-4.

Four $100,000 finals. Four divisions packed with Ohio standouts all part of the 15-race Sunday night card. Post Time 6PM.
