The Wandering House

The Wandering House The Wandering House examines the meaning of home from the perspective of evolving towns in rural Minnesota.

Featuring an ice-fishing house retrofitted as a mobile audio-recording studio, The Wandering House examines the meaning of home from the perspective of three river towns in rural Minnesota: Northfield, Lanesboro, and Red Wing. Featuring an ice-fishing house retrofitted as a mobile audio-recording studio, Cecilia Cornejo Sotelo—originally from Chile and a long-time resident of the American Midwest—

invites community members to record their thoughts on "home," along with their vision of and for their respective towns. Designed solely for this purpose, The Wandering House encourages communities to reflect in order to envision and generate paths toward collective wellbeing.

Time for my dear project, The Wandering House, to hibernate ✨
🌿🍂🌦 So glad the physical structure will be tucked away in my backyard, where I plan to use it as a writing and envisioning space. I look forward to whatever might emerge from this quiet, blissful time 🧵🎬🪡🦄

Heartfelt thanks to everyone and anyone who participated and supported the project this summer/fall, including my wonderful assistants, Adiana Contreras and Leo Hu, Carleton College's DIEC, and to my neighbor, a real Superman, also known as Scott Swanson, who transported the house in its multiple wanderings in and around Northfield.

Dear folks in and around Northfield,

The Wandering House will be part of the Hispanic Heritage Celebration this SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, at Central Park. We'll be there from 11am until 2pm, sharing the Sonic Archive but also recording testimonials from community members. Like a modern-day confessional, The Wandering House offers an intimate and welcoming space for people to share their thoughts on home and reflect on the ways we build community, solidarity, and belonging.

If you cannot make it on the 13th, we'll be back at Riverwalk Market Fair the following Saturday, September 20, from 9am until 1pm.

We are deeply grateful to the Division of Inclusion, Equity, and Community at Carleton College for supporting this endeavor and the many people who come by and share their time and experiences with us.

We hope to see many of you!

Thank you to everyone who wandered by us last Saturday at Riverwalk Market Fair! We are delighted with the questions we were asked, the visitors who came into The Wandering House to listen to the Sonic Archive, and the thoughtful comments people left. As one comment we received put it: “Listening to these testimonials took me to a place of wonder & beauty that brought tears to my eyes. This is the project that we didn’t know we needed.”

We will be back at Riverwalk on Saturday 8/30, so stop by if you haven’t yet!

With deep gratitude to the Center for Community and Civic Engagement and the Division of Inclusion, Equity and Community at Carleton College for their support.

After a very long time away from public view, sifting through many hours of audio testimonials, The Wandering House is back in Northfield!

Set up this time as a LISTENING SPACE, the house will offer community members the opportunity to enjoy a constellation of testimonials gathered in Northfield, Lanesboro, and Red Wing since the project was launched in 2019. This SONIC ARCHIVE is the result of a long-time collaboration with Kakare Interactive and made possible by the generosity of hundreds of project participants, multiple community organizations, audio editors, translators, and project supporters.

Come find us at Riverwalk Market Fair on Saturdays August 9, 21, and 30th and at Spring Wind Farm on dates soon to be announced.

Very grateful to Andrea Duarte-Alonso for featuring my work for Project Optimist.

Cecilia Cornejo Sotelo’s films became community-focused after she moved to Minnesota. Since then, her projects have taken on new forms, such as storytelling and embroidery.

My gratitude to Sahan Journal for highlighting "Latina and Latinx MN: Re/claiming Space in Times of Change." Curated by the indefatigable Zamara Cuyún and William Gustavo Franklin Torres,
the show features work by 42 self-identifying Latina women and non-binary Latinx Minnesota-based artists with ancestral roots in Latin America. The show is up until December 8 at the The Catherine G. Murphy Gallery which is located in 2004 Randolph Ave., St. Paul.
