This is a tiger eye cross section before it meets a lapidary wheel.

Every polished strand starts as rough like this: iron-rich sedimentary layers laid down over millions of years, then transformed by metamorphism deep in the earth, where golden quartz fibers grow band by band. Each layer catches light at a slightly different angle, creating the moving glow known as chatoyancy.

The polish doesn't create the shimmer. It just uncovers what took the earth millions of years to build.
