Katherine Saik DeLugan and Albert Cano Smit present Olivier Messiaen's rarely performed final song cycle, Harawi. Harawi is a surrealist and multicultural reimagining of the legend of Tristan and Isolde, and is the only solo vocal work in the composer’s Tristan trilogy. In Messiaen's poetry, the lovers are represented by mythical figures from Indigenous Andean cultures, and their journey from life to death is told through abstract images of numbers, colors, Sanskrit incantations, and transcribed birdsongs.

"A worthwhile presentation by the ever-growing Adams Theater has added a fine piece to the Berkshire summer arts. It is sad not to have a second performance available, for only a limited audience got to hear this vital new work-in-progress." Pioneer Valley audiences can catch this show at Smith College, Sunday, September 22 at 3 PM in Sweeney Concert Hall. Free and open to the public.

On Monday, September 16 at 1 PM, pianist Yang Liu presents virtuosic transcriptions of celebrated waltzes by Johann Strauss Jr., featuring familiar tunes from The Blue Danube, Frühlingsstimmen, and Die Fledermaus. Also on the program are lesser-known waltzes by Franz Liszt, Florence Price, and Ottorino Respighi. Part of the Music Mondays Series, the half-hour concert is free and open to the public.

Music Department faculty members will give a short concert on Sunday, September 15 at 3 PM followed by a Q & A about studying music at Smith. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear and meet some of the new faculty members and learn about the array of courses and ensembles offered through the Music Department. The program includes works by Frédéric Chopin, Manuel de Falla, Reinhold Glière, and Henry Purcell. Free and open to the public.
