“Yellow Apartment By Forbes Library”, newest plein air. I feel like once I started to pry back into making art again, the flood gates opened! When I was here, I was greeted by a big cat with a squeaky tiny voice on the screened-in porch on the left side of the picture

“Sandwich Boards on Old South Street”.
Somehow it’s been almost a year since my last plein air, but it’s been an action-packed year, what with kicking cancer among other things. I’m trying really hard to get better at the game of painting dappled light, which is one of my favorite effects but … god, it’s tough to get right!
This was done here in Northampton, and while any plein air session is bound to garner people’s attention, there are always many more interactions with unusual folks while in downtown “Hamp”

Earlier this week I was in Boston for a medical appointment, and while I was there I brought with me my art supplies and started wandering the streets of Beacon Hill— which is just dripping with beauty at every corner. I could literally get multiple great paintings standing in the same spot and just looking in different directions; it almost feels like cheating.
This is at the intersection of Garden St and Myrtle St. I call it “Sunlit Corridor”. Acryla-gouache on hot press paper, 6” x 6”

My second plein air of Northampton! (So far i’m 2/2 on bridge paintings..)
I’m pretty literal with my titles nowadays, so I think I’ll call this one “Chain Link Bridge Over Main Street”. Acryla-gouache on paper, 6” x 6”. I just love how the light was pouring around those shadows. What do you think?

Last weekend I snuck over to my alma mater Gordon College and started a plein air I’d wanted to do for ages of the admissions building, Frost Hall. I had this vision in my head in advance of focusing on the stunning, towering pine trees that loom above it and keeping them a vibrant blue to emphasize a sense of serenity. (I wish I could do a similar plein air of my favorite old dorm, Drew Hall, but it’s gone 😢). What do you think?
Acryla-gouache on paper, about 5” x 5”, took about 5.5 hours.
Also, feel free to DM me for sale info.

As soon as the planets align to allow me the space, time, and energy to paint in plein air again, I feel really satiated and complete in a way that’s hard to explain (without sounding pretentious). Every artist has “their thing(s)”, and it’s so relieving to say that I’ve definitely found mine. These are from last weekend at the mysterious Montague Bookmill, from a couple different angles. I’ve got to keep coming back, at least as long as i’m welcome there with my setup etc.
It’s hard to come up with formal titles for these things, but the first one is called “An Uncooperative Day”.

I’ve had a little time lately to make art but didn’t feel like doing anything. So I made myself illustrate a strange and amusing dream, cuz that’s my jam.

I regret that this page is now semi-dormant; hopefully sometime in the future I can get it revitalized the way I had it going last fall. In the meantime, have a plein-air pen drawing of a tight cluster of repurposed old mill buildings in the town center of Easthampton, Mass from this warm afternoon.

Next installments!! I was really proud of this first pun. But it did mean slightly breaking format as “Sherlock” is a show not a movie— but, eh, details. And then there’s “Aladdin” and “Titanic. If you know someone who needs a hilarious, memorable, customized save the date or invitation, you be sure to let me know!

Next in this series: parodying one of my absolute personal faves, “The Road to El Dorado”, plus “Princess Bride” and “Once”. What’s your favorite of these whacky watercolor save-the-dates? I loved this first one so much but we ended up being unable to use it, because I put it as “the Road to Old Sturbridge” which was our original venue (Old Sturbridge Village) which sadly because of Covid, did not work out. So, my catharsis is sharing it now!! Painted the horse to look like the big draft horses they have at OSV, coming down one of the landmark old recreation village’s “main streets”.

I can’t believe I never uploaded these here!! Back in late 2020 when Jon and I were planning for our original wedding date, I got the idea to do save-the-dates parodying on a famous movie poster. But the killer question was: which one??? How do you choose when there are so many good visual puns to be made and on top of that your man is so deft at coming up with puns in the conventional sense? I couldn’t decide so…. I went with 15 😬 I had the time and I was cackling the whole way through. They’re all watercolor and pen and they’re all small so they look a bit shakey. They’re not my best work artistically but my God were they an absolute joy to make. If you or someone you love is getting married and you/they don’t know what to do for a memorable, hilarious save-the-date or invitation- shoot me a dm 😃 these are so so fun!

Study of a photo that’s credit to Ginger Kathrens. This is a “spit paint”- something to just try and get done in a small amount of time (a little under two hours in this case). Part of my horse phase as a child (which I definitely didn’t grow out of) was the books and documentary on a pale wild Mustang named Cloud back in the 90s. Kathrens’s photography chronicles this stallion’s life from the day he’s born all the way to his life as an old patriarch, along with the dozens of others like him in the Rockies, living rough and free out west. In this photo, he shares a quiet moment with his new “stepson” as the author refers to him by.
