I started making books in various shapes 25+ years ago. My practice ramped up when I was at Smith College and had access to Vandercook letter presses, a room full of type, and a foundry + the expertise of Elliot Offner and Lee Burns. I still miss setting type by hand. And casting metal is a beautiful and sometimes scary process. Here is “The Gift.”

A heart-shaped book on a chilly Wednesday. This is a facsimile of a book made c. 1460, the Chansonnier de Jean de Montchenu, which is why some lucky individual is touching this with uncovered hands!

"Apple of My Eye" for my wife. Anyone else crazy about watermarks? I found the piece of paper used for the leaves of the book in my stash. It was purchased when I was working as a student in the art department at Smith. It was made in 1980 and I wish I could remember where. An Italian monastery? Eliot Offner told me about the paper; he was responsible for purchasing it. As you'll see there's an image of Jesus and a hand with a cross.

I'll be offering a variation on this book in a limited edition and will also sell individual prints if anyone is interested. I will be posting examples and prices early this coming week. Stay tuned! ❤️
